this has been discussed before and it will probably not happen anytime in the near future. i cannot speak for 5+ years, anything can happen in the tech world in 5 years.

any acquisition like that wouldn't be quiet and peaceful like the AMD/ATi purchase or nvidia/ageia.

I can image. The Nvidia/amd news would create quite a stir not only in the tech arena but for stock holders too.

An nVidia purchase of AMD would never be approved, so you don't need to worry about it.

What's likely to happen is that AMD will be bought out by a private investment firm which will infuse money into it and get it back on its feet with a competitive product.

Oh yeah, they said they were still going to support it too. Hah what a laugh that was. The motherboard I just replaced for my new system was an Asrock 939dual SATA2 ULI M1695 chipset. Very nice motherboard too. Support for it dropped because a few months after I had bought it, Nvidia went and bought ULI and well the rest is history.

NVidia buy AMD? Hah. I doubt NVidia would be terribly interested, although the competition commissions in the US and EU definitely would be interested in it if they were.

hmm?

AMD is struggling on two fronts now: nVIDIA and Intel. There's going to have to be a lot of money put in two win either. I think private investment firms have better places to put their money...

Any credibility eetimes had is now gone.

Regardless of all the problems AMD has had they are still a $6 bil/yr company. In the last 12 months they have spent more on R&D than they have in their history.

Regardless of all their problems AMD is still nearly 4 times the size of nvidia. AMD is most likely undervalued by as much as 50%. Could things get worse for AMD ??? .....

Sure.

But where they compete directly with nVidia - in chipsets and video cards - AMD is lookin' better and better :)

Agreed. Competition between them is wonderful. It makes all the products better and cheaper.
