I'm building a system for the old man and he wants to be able to do analog video capture/editing, so I'm trying to determine the best way to make this available.
Currently, he would only have analog sources and I really don't anticipate him picking up a dv recorder anytime soon, so I'm not worried about providing dv capture.

I was thinking that I would advise him to get a dedicated capture card, since they come with better editing software than you get packaged with a VIVO card, and, I would assume that a dedicated card will be more effective an encoder than a VIVO (yes?).

I'm not impressed with the Pinnacle DC10 card, since it doesn't have audio - that leaves me with their $500 card, which is probably the upper limit of what he would be willing to spend.
Is this card (DV500+) the best way to go?

I also see that Dazzle has a cards in the $250 and $450 ranges and I've read about another one, the DVD Cut Machine from a company called VITEC.

I've had some trouble finding reviews and guides for this purchase on the net, so if anyone has any insight or experience here, it would be much appreciated!

Thanks!

What is wrong with that card? My father uses it, works perfect. Everyone has a sound card right?
It's also cheap and the software is good and easy to use.
With the latest software package you get support for DV. Just add a IEEE-1894 card. (this option is not tested by me yet)
If you have DivX4 installed it can also compress to MPEG4 from within the program. If you don't like that just render to a normal .avi file and compress with VirtualDub.

Don't see the problem here.
