Analog cable from CD drive to Soundcard

I'm picking up parts for my new computer.

I bought a SB XFI Extrememusic today - no cable to connect to the CD drive.

I bought a Sony 810A DVD writer last week - no cable to connect to the soundcard.

I'm reasonably certain that whatever motherboard I get will have a cable provided to go from onboard sound (which I will disable) to the CD drive. However, shouldn't the CD drive provide all the cables necessary to connect it to other parts of the computer?

It has been a while since I bought a CD drive, so I can't remember exactly, but I seem to remember that they used to come with that cable.

I guess I'll have to put the analog cable on my list ....

the IDE cable should come with the motherboard
and that other cable should come from the optical drive
thats how it usually is

CD audio cables are generally supplied with the optical drives. However since the audio now travels digitally thru the IDE bus you don't need to use one.

John,

So my Soundblaster XFI will pick up the sound from DVD's and Cds without the analog cable connecting them? Did that change recently? The DVD writer did come with an IDE cable, and the manual shows how to connect the analog sound cable, but no cable is provided.

Ricemarine,

$29 for an analog cable for the CD drive? That sounds very expensive. It isn't like they're that complicated a cable.

ps - Just checked the online XFI manual. It says this about the aux port:

"Connect an Analog CD cable from the analog output of a TV Tuner to this connector."

Since it doesn't say connect your CD drive to it, you must be right. Time to Google and find out about this. Can you tell it has been about 3 years or so since I assembled a computer from scratch?

Right, you don't need it.

I've never had to mess with it, but I think the checkbox for enabling digital audio from your optical drives in device manager relates to this.

Well, I just leaned about that from Google. I've been assembling computers since 486 days at least (started with ][+'s in High School, I've been around a while, but just missed punch cards), and have always merrily connected those cables. Missed the change to not needing them.

Now I know I can ignore it.

thanks!

You might need it to play an old DOS or Win95 game that plays CD tracks for music during the game (like Mechwarrior 2) but not for anything since then.

A retail boxed CD/DVD drive might still include an analog cable but not most OEM.

It was a retail boxed drive.

Even "retail boxed" items are getting cheap with what the provide. All the manuals are on disk except for quick start cards. I guess Sony decided to save 5 cents a box and not include the cables any more.

Does Linux support digital audio now? I think last I messed with Redhat 8 or so, you still needed that silly cable.

Aside from the fact that you don't need this cable, I'm shocked by what you paid...these shouldn't be more than about $3.

Hi, Cable usually comes with CD player/burner. You may not even need one. Most CD drives are passing the audio over the IDE cable today. Try it. Jim
