an upgrade to an 8800gt..do not need the highest performance

i have been out of the loop for a while...what is a good upgrade for the 8800gt card? i do not care about chipset either ATI or NVidia is fine...which is better now? I am not on SLI or crssfire..just one slot. I have e8400 and lots of memory running Vista 64bit. I run 1900x1200 on 24 inch monitors.

I play some games..mostly FPS like COD world at war, UT..etc.

An 8800GT certainly provides very good performance.

Any upgrade for the kids will not be noticeable and will not be worth the cost.
 
If you're going 1920x1200 then you'd want a Radeon 4890 or GeForce GTX 275 to be safe. They perform comparable to each other, but most people without SLI boards will buy the 4890 because it costs less. A 4890 should run you $190-$210. If that's out of your price range, the next step down is the Radeon 4870 1GB or GTX 260. Again, performance is comparable so go with whichever is the cheapest. I would not recommend anything cheaper than that at the resolution.

edit: If you're interested in getting a DX11 card, ATi should be launching them next month. You could wait 'til then. Even if you don't like any of the new cards I'm sure the 4890 and 4870 won't cost any more then they do now, so the only loss would be that your kids gotta wait.
 
ATI is announcing 5800 series on September 10th. Wait until then to get details on when those cards will ship.

Otherwise, sell the 8800GT and get a GTX275/4890.
 
As RussianSensation says now is a bad time to buy an expensive card as the next gen is coming out soon.

GTX260/4870 would still give you plenty of performance at 19*12 and cost significantly less then the GTX275/4890. At 16*10 an 8800GT is still fast enough to run at max settings minus AA, and will remain that way as long as most games are console ports.
 
Thanks for the inputs. I have the 8800gt in my box. I would upgrade mine, core duo e8400 and let them have my 8800gt. There are some used ones on the for sale forums. But maybe just another 8800gt for the kids box would be sufficient?

If you can't wait, go with a 4870. If you can, hold out for the 5850 or 5750 which should be a month or so away. I'd suggest waiting if it isn't a rush. The new DX11 parts should offer some excellent values for your dollar and at worst they should cause a price drop in current parts if that is more to your liking.
