This will be my first post. I had an odd experience with my first overclock. My heat only went up minimally. From ~41C to ~43C w/ a 23mhz increase in FSB (200Mhz overall). Hopefully, my computer specs will show up in the form of my signature, if not, I'll repost w/ them after I get home from work tonight. Thanks in advance.

Why is this odd? the A64 chips run very cool. I see no problem here. GL OCing that puppy.

and welcome to Anandtech.

I was under the impression that OCing would raise my temps alot more than a couple degrees. Thanks for the information. And my system is still a real work in progress. I'm buying a new HD tomorrow. going with a SATA drive, and I'm going to be upgrading my RAM (using generic PC2100 ATM) soon.

Any suggestions on what to get for both HD and RAM? I'm trying not to spend huge ammounts, but still get quality components. Kinda like I did with my video card. Runs like a dream, but cost about 1/4th of the top of the line stuff (paid a touch over $100).

Voltage increases will raise your temps a lot more than a couple of degrees. As you push your chip and increase voltage, your temps will get higher.

If I were you just choose something like Kingston, Corsair, mushkin or any other big name manufactuers PC3200 value ram 512MB should be around $70ish though it may be highier or lower as I havn't looked at RAM prices in awhile and that suff fluctuates quite a bit. It can be had for pretty cheap and has a lifetime warrenty.

As for a HDD, I would personally go with a Seagate. They offer 5 year warrenty's and are pretty much silent.

In my experience, it's not always perfectly linear. In other words, with some chips, the first bumps in vcore give better OCing with not a lot of heat increase. On the other end of the scale, the last bump gives a lot of heat and little/no FSB improvement.

Well, I ordered my Hard Drive already, and I changed my mind, and went with a 74GB Raptor drive. I did so with a worried mind, since my last Western Digital drive died only a little over a year in (no raid, or any "strange" setups). But, after doing a little research, it seems i just had a lemon, so I decided that the 10,000RPM was worth the risk.
