An iPod modification question

I remember reading an article online about someone who used steel wool on his iPod to stop scratching on the rather delicate back of the iPod

Does anyone have a link to the article online (I googled, but the official article source is down), or an alternative of some sort? Thanks very much, ATOT!
 
He may have done it to make a brushed-finish surface which would reduce the appearance of scratches.

I find brushed metals quite nice looking, but they are in no way mirrored.
 
just go to your local grocery store and get a brand spankin new sponge with the rough side...

take the rough side and slide it up and down the back side of the ipod... in seconds you will have a nice brushed aluminum look!

I did this to my ipod

Really! The metal is a lot harder than the plastic. The plastic scratches if you look at it crosseyed. Brasso and a cotton cloth helps but Brasso stinks - literally. Should be called Asso.
 
Let me clarify: I want to know how to get a more "brushed" finish on the back plate of the iPod, as opposed to the shiny, delicate mirror finish it currently has.

I want to remove the mirror finish! The only thing I have available is steel wool, I think. Will that work out?

PLEASE, don't try this yourself! I tried using Brasso to clean the back of my iPod, and only succeeded in making the back of it shine a bit more. You would think this would be a good thing, but it only seems the make the existing scratches more visible.

I knew better than to try it on the front after what happened on the back, but I did try cleaning the LCD screen of my pager with it. Again, it only made the scratches look worse.

Apple quality, once agian! But because they refuse to get anything else, they are left with "OMG MY IPOD IS SCRATCHED, HOW CAN IF FIX IT!?"
I have no sympathy.
 
why not get a case for it? the silicon ones are easy and cheap. or u can get a hard shell like agent18... no worries then.
 
I think I'd stay away from steel wool. There's always the possibility that some of the extremely fine steel particles will work their way to the innards. That could be bad.
 
Ask Goku, he seems to be very versed in iPods.

On a side note, why do people care so much about what the polished finish on the back of their iPods looks like?
Is it really that much of a problem? I thought the whole "worn in" look was in.

Well apparently not, maybe for you... It's perfectly understandable for people to expect something they buy to look about the same for a few months, not a few seconds...
