What I mean is that conflict over water would likely be much more violent/entrenched, since one cannot live without water but oil is not an absolute necessity to survive.

I am by no means saying that oil does not drive conflict, but I am saying that I believe the coming scarcity of drinkable water is going to cause more problems than oil does. For example, the biggest (and only according the Economist) barrier between a Israeli-Syrian peace settlement is an argument over water rights in the sea of galilee and golan heights. The huge dam the chinese are building is already pissing people off in Laos and other surrounding countries. Water table levels in continental europe have fallen precipitously, etc.

Basically, a water shortage affects everyone in the world, b/c everyone needs relatively large quantities of water. There are already alternatives to oil, and many countries do not need copious amounts of oil to survive. That is why I said that I think trying to replace oil with water (in cars, etc) will only exaccerbate an already growing problem.

uh...polar ice caps anybody? water should be the least of anybody's concerns. except maybe farmers in arid areas where CHEAP water is scarce. as far as scarcity of potable water to the point of conflicts and scares... dont even DREAM IT

Where do you live that you don't hear about water right conflicts? Fresh water availability is a problem in a lot of places, including the southwestern US.
