An intruder has entered my basement, my two soldiers have failed to subdue it

There is no filter or anything for the vent tube on our dryer. A chipmunk crawled down the dryer exhaust house from outside and knocked it loose. He is now running around in my basement, squeaking and hiding while my two cats pretty much follow him around. If they wanted him dead, I'm confident that they could have done it. They seem more interested in just chasing him around.

The following strategies were attempted and both failed:

1) Tossing a cardboard box on him as he ran around the basement. He quickly changes direction.

2) Closing a cardboard box and cutting a small hole in the side, then attempting to scare him into said hole for capture.

I hadn't entirely given up on those strategies, but he ran under the washing machine and I gave up for now.

I'm moving out of the apartment this saturday.

Call animal control? I don't know if they charge or anything, but it wouldn't hurt to ask.

They'll kill it when they get bored.

Or probably just go to sleep.

Edit: If it's anything like my cat...

She never attacks anything except me. 🙁

Louisville Slugger and some drunk friends. Hours of fun. They might even get it, who knows...better budget for a new washer+drier, though.

I'm not calling animal control if they charge anything. If I can't catch it, I'll just leave it in the basement and act like it showed up after I moved.

stop feeding your cats for a day or two. Chimpunk will vanish into thin air. The cats, once they start eating it, will lick up every last drop, and even clean themselves.

I dunno about chipmunks, but my friend's cat had its eyeball gouged out when chasing a squirrel. Don't chipmunks have even bigger teeth?

My cats are not great at the killing part either. Even with bugs. They will follow it around and play with it, never killing it. It was particularly disappointing when I had two wasps in the house and the cats played with them a bit then went into the other room and took a nap, with the wasps still fully functional.
