The great joke about the Republican party and their anti-government rhetoric is that they are and want to be the government. Of course there is something to be said for their thinking because of that. Liberalism always has been and will always be the leading edge of culture. Conservatives have no real existence except as a reluctant petulant screaming child that doesn't want to participate. Without liberal leadership there can be no wind to fill conservative sails or lungs. Conservatives exist as opposition against the tide of history and the force of evolution. They aren't really well represented by an elephant as much as the tail of a donkey. Conservatives are yesterday's liberals, the people on the trailing edge of the curve.
