I'm not sure what I'd do. It can be pretty dangerous getting near a wounded animal like that. I remember a dog got hit by a car about 100 feet from my house and when anybody tried to get near it (even it's owner) it tried to rip their hands off.

I dunno but if I was Chinasian or something, I'd probably eat it.

What is a Chinasian?

They cook dogs in Mexico, too. I wonder how many people here would try to save a dying cow on the side of the road. They'd probably think "ewwww" and drive on. We just like to say nice things about dogs because they are cute and cuddly.
no, that's not exactly why. it's because dogs are pets, and yes, obviously we think of pets differently.

All you have done is drawn an arbitrary line formulated from cultural norms. How is a dog any different from any other animal on this planet other than the fact that the society that you live in has them as pets?
yes, that's what i just said.

So, would you not help an animal on the road unless it was considered a pet since pets are the only ones that draw long term emotional attachments?

Once again you are clueless to not see a distinction, it its a racoon it could bite the hell out of you. Considering your own safety first is important. And even with a dog your going to get a feel for its demeaner and if its angry and snarling at you then your going to leave it and call animal control or someone that can hopefully help it. But not risk that it could attack you.

Dogs won't attack you though, short of being rabid - almost all dogs are going to know that humans are mostly good and be smart enough to let the human help it.

Most wild animals would not

Dumbass

Want to try reading one post above yours? Like all of your posts, when something doesn't agree with your point of view, start name calling. Injured animals, whether domestic or wild will react differently depending on the injuries. My own dog will growl at his owners when he gets injured and doesn't want the injury to be touched. Once again you've proven that you're full of crap.

I respect all life, if it is possible I will bring it to the vet. If it is hopeless I will finish it off.

I still remember a few years ago a couple Gooses and their baby walking across the street, all the cars stopped and let them get by, a STI fly by and run over both adult, that left all the baby running around hopelessly. It break my heart and I end up spend an hour to catch them all and drop it to my vet. FYI that for everything wild life you kill there maybe a dozen small one die because of it, plz respect all life.

I'd stop, pick it up, and bring it to the vet.

I'm confident that it was past the point of being helped by a vet. Also, frightened, injured animals are a real challenge to pick up without getting bitten, so that usually isn't an option.

I have scars on my hand from attempting to help a seriously injured animal. I learned that lesson the hard way. However, I'd have still attempted to find the owner of the animal.

I've done this before. Sometimes there's nothing you can do.

On another note, I was leaving LRAFB one day, and the car ahead of me hit a raccoon - I only had a few seconds before I passed over it, and it lifted it's head right before I did. I still remember hearing him hit the underside of my car a few times. :(

I wouldn't care if it was a racoon or something, but a puppy/dog, cat/kitten, etc. would upset me

Get out, move it off the road, put blanket round it, go door to door if practicable, and if not, call the nearest vet.

Yesterday I was driving home on a back road and I saw a puppy that had obviously just been hit by a car. He was lying in the road slightly twitching. I kept on driving because I rationalized that he was probably in shock, and not feeling much at that point. I know some people who have told me that in that situation, they would have tried to run over the dog to finish him off and keep him from suffering even more. I considered it, but just didn't have it in me. Now I kind of feel bad about not doing it.

What would you do?

Take it to a vet to get it euthanized. Shock or not, better that it be taken care of rather than lingering on.

Sometimes being put down is the more humane choice... although never pleasant.

my coworker's old boss once stopped her brand new bmw on the side of the road to go out and pick up a hurt bird with the intention of putting it in her backseat. well, she was a really smart lady because apparently she left the door open with the keys in the ignition. when she turned around, with bird in hand, her car was gone. :) genius.

thats the oldest trick in the book... luring rich women out of their cars by placing injured animals on the side of the road!

If it aint my dog or looked like somebodys I knew I would just keep on driving, its a cruel world and while I'm sorry the dog got hit I dont feel any remorse. I definitely wouldnt run it over to finish the dog off, I'm not that heartless.

Why in the world would anyone wanna run over a dying dog? Just move it off of the roadway, eventually news will reach the owners if DOT hasn't already picked it up. I'd appreciate someone not turning my dead dogs corpse into soup...

Keep driving if it is clearly a stray. Around where I live, there are dozens of stray cats and dogs all over the place, they literally roam the streets.

Out city relies on animal control that serves like 5 different cities, and we're on the edge of it.

If I clearly saw a tag, I might stop and see if I can help it out or find the owner if they're nearby. But around my area, I wouldn't be surprised if even I found the owner, they would of thought I ran it over.

Best probably to ignore it.

There is a difference between stopping to help a dying dog and calling 911. WTF is a wrong with you? You don't tie up 911 for a dead dog.

This reminds me...

I rescued a stray kitten once. It's mother was killed so it was abandoned and alone for least 36 hours. I took it in and immediately rushed to the petstore to get some supplies. Prior to this, I've never had a pet so it was a learning experience. I had to wean it since it was only a couple of days old. Took it to a vet to get all its checkups and shots. A few weeks later, when it could walk on its own and its eyes opened up, I gave it up for adoption. One of the best things I did in life.

A couple of months back, I accidentally hit and pretty sure killed a cat that was crossing a busy intersection. Saw it ran in front of me. I hit the brakes but still heard the thump. Looked back in the rear view mirror and saw that it wasn't moving anymore. :(

I guess my score thus far is 1 for 1.

What, I'm the only one who would capitalize on this situation and sell the damn thing to the nearest Panda Express?

Might get some coupons out of it, at least.

There is at least one wise crack who has been banned for making racist comments in this thread. Wanna make #3?
