Being a "pet person" has nothing to do with it. You mean your not a humane person. And personally I'd say the same about all of the people that have said they'd do nothing. This is whats wrong with society, yea you can argue that its just a dog - but if it sparks no feelings inside of you at all, then you have problems IMO.

To the OP, I can understand not doing something because you didn't know how to react - regretting something later shows that you have some shred of humanity. If you think you wouldn't do something thats fine, but if you didn't have some sort of emotion or look back at it afterward and have some sort of reaction then your an evil person

Are you a vegetarian or better yet, a vegan?

There is a big difference between eating animals and not having any feeling or emotion when seeing something die. I don't care what it is, it sparks some sort of feeling in normal human beings. I watch nature shows all the time, if you see chimps murdering each other like humans and then cannibalizing each other do you feel anything? Do you not hesitate for a second when you see a dieing puppy in the road? Then you have problems.

If you just drive by and you can tell its dead, thats one thing, if you can see that its not then - nevermind you and douche bag here obviously dont get it

What is a Chinasian?

They cook dogs in Mexico, too. I wonder how many people here would try to save a dying cow on the side of the road. They'd probably think "ewwww" and drive on. We just like to say nice things about dogs because they are cute and cuddly.

That's very true actually. If I saw an injured chick that was hot, I'd help her out. If she was ugly, I'd be less intrigued. Humans are shallow like that.

no, that's not exactly why. it's because dogs are pets, and yes, obviously we think of pets differently.

Pigs can be pets too. We eat pigs. We do terrible things to pigs. I don't place any artificial forms of worth on them over a dog, though. Humans make the world go 'round..not dogs.

All you have done is drawn an arbitrary line formulated from cultural norms. How is a dog any different from any other animal on this planet other than the fact that the society that you live in has them as pets?

So, it's convenient for you that you never have to see the killing of the animals that you eat, is it not?

No, I do not break down and cry when I watch National Geographic Explorer. That poor, poor zebra got eaten by a lion. I wish someone drove by at that time and saved it.

I've done it before.

...with a cat. Except it was just walking across the yard...

I keed, I keed...

Seriously, I had to do that before with a cat. There's pretty much nothing else you can do to help it.

If I needed to kill an animal to eat its different too. If I went hunting and shot a deer, and it didn't die I would track it and try to put it out of its misery right away - and I'd feel like ****** for making it suffer. Its called respect for life. If you hit a cat in the road and kept driving without checking it I think it shows a lot about you. If you see its dead, at least you looked and you might feel less guilty but still have some feeling. I can tell you would be the sort of person to just keep going - or maybe you would stop, see that its suffering and still leave it. Thats the impression I get from you guys.

In the OPs position, I can understand why he did it but the fact that he felt guilty later is what you guys dont seem to understand. In the same position, you would feel nothing and that shows what kind of person you are whether you think so or not.

I don't feel anything either, its nature and its life. Running over a cat is natural too, and its life. The difference is that some people will take the time to at least see if they can help and others wouldn't - and it distinguishes people's character under such a scenerio.

I see dead squirels, cats, skunks, racoons all the time and I don't feel a thing. But if I see a wounded animal that is domesticated and I think I can help it I'd try. I've done it before and I'd do it again.

Point out the difference to me. Unlike most humans, I don't believe humans are more valuable than all other life.

See and this is a humane attitude. You feel bad, and you put it out of its misery. I'm not saying you should try to save it if it can't be saved. And actually I'm not saying that you should kill it either, I would - but you should have some feeling in your heart either way.

Good for you. I wouldn't fault anyone trying to help. I wouldn't fault anyone who wouldn't help. A dead dog..is really not that big of a deal.

I'd stop and kill it if it was badly hurt, but not before checking it for tags and calling the owner. No animal deserves to suffer.

It wasn't DEAD, it was DIEING - do you see a distinction there? Maybe you don't, wouldn't suprise me for a second that you dont. What if you could see that the dog most likely had a broken leg and was still moving? You would still just drive off and not think about it for a second right?

Do you only buy free range eggs? You know those chickens suffer by sitting in cages that allow zero mobility and they don't get to die off. They get to continually labor so that you can have your omelette. Hey, I'd check the animal myself and do what I could for it, so your sweeping generalizations are pretty much developed purely in your mind but I do enjoy pointing the hypocrisy of people for condemning others when they themselves do little to nothing for the animals that they praise so highly.

yes, that's what i just said.

So, would you not help an animal on the road unless it was considered a pet since pets are the only ones that draw long term emotional attachments?

I think we need a poll, so that anyone who wouldn't kill it - or at least feel guilty later for not doing it as the OP did can see how huge a minority they are. Maybe they can seek professional help
