An idea for why Christmas is a federal holiday

could it be that we would lose too much money if it weren't a holiday due to soooo many people taking off for religious reasons? therefore by making christmas a federal holiday, it is not a religious holiday but rather an economical holiday?

It has been that way for a long time so why question it now....accept the day off and if you don't celebrate it then just be happy you are getting paid to sit at home getting drunk while posting stupid useless stuff on ATOT.

Agreed

Holidays are a control mechanism, as are many traditions. There was a point in my life when I tried to make people understand this, and open their eyes. I gave up because "most people are hopelessly dependent on the system", they were not ready to be unplugged........

Did the church dictate to the government that we celebrate christmas? NO. seperation is intact.
Go play with your ACLU buddies...........

Hey, at least we aren't the ones getting raped in the a55 because we didn't pay our taxes. Precedent is a b!tch huh.

doesn't this idea still maintain the seperation of church and state?

Getting a federal holiday because of a christian one?

um..

i stated why it's not because of christian reasons but for economical ones

also, don't get me wrong, i'm not christian, and neither believe or dis-believe in a god

also, i only celebrate christmas for the cultural aspect, not religious

it doesn't have to be the church dictating anything for seperation of church/state to be violated

Hey backoff..........I am NOT a bible beater, in fact, relegion falls under the category of tradition IMHO.
I just think that some organizations get overzealous.

Having worked a little bit "on the inside", I can tell you that there is no way the government is organized or efficient enough to maintain any sort of "agenda" or "sinister plan" over the people.

Everyone would just take off anyway, so they might as well give them the day off.

Hey, if they want to give me paid holidays off for every religion, that's fine. 😉

Let me clarify. When I say dictate, I mean lobby. The government did not feel pressured to make christmas a federal holiday.

See this

Christmas is a part of American culture. It is not a religious holiday practiced by only those with certain beleifs. Nearly everyone in this country celebrates Christmas, and probably less than half of them do anything religious. Thanksgiving is as religious as Christmas do to people saying grace before dinner. Hell, the reason that the pilgrims who came and had the first Thanksgiving at all is because they left Europe for religious reasons.

As a matter of fact, every socially significant tradition in this country has SOME religious aspect associated with it, simply because of the number of religious people in this country. It does not mean that because there is any religious tie AT ALL to something, that it cannot be dealt with by the government in any way.

Hmmm I never thought of it from that angle. I was not stating that the government had anything to do with it. I was speaking about the religious aspect.

Christmas is a federal holiday b/c Americans are pagans, and none of them believe in the true god.

they'd rather you worship a tree, a fat dude in a red suit, and a flag full of stars and stripes...
