An idea for super quiet case fans

Okay, bear with me on this one. I was drifting off to sleep the other night when I began thinking about case fans. There's a pretty good rule of thumb that the more air a fan pushes, then the more noise it'll make. Well, I was thinking of designs that might cause less air flow noise. I couldn't think of any. Then I thought back (like way back, like back in the day back) to one day when I was watching PBS when a special on owls was on. Owls are reknowned for their stealth especially considering their size. I recall one of the show hosts somehow tipping his/her arm to cause the owl to flap its wings. Upon doing so the great bird flapped its wings frantically, yet totally silently as well as I could tell. Thinking back on that got me thinking. Why can't we design a fan blade that acts like one of those and has minimal noise despite the fact that it's moving a considerable amount of air? There's something for you all to chew on for a while. It might be worth looking into, yes? :)

LOL, spending my nites contemplating heavy duty cooling solutions isn't on my top ten list of favorite things to do anymore, I like Pana Flo or Antec fans, max cooling but very quiet :)

Probably not as energy efficient. Moving a blade up and down you would negate some of your own energy when accelerating in the opposite direction. Fans are probably still the best way to go.

You know, i thought those used magnets to propel the blades. what would happen if you used one to cool a hard drive?

It might have been while I was in the shower. I can't quite recall. It's been a while since I thought of the idea. :)

I wasn't suggesting we stick owl wings in our cases.

Just modify the blades so that they have some sort of muffling effect on there so that the drag of the air over the blades isn't (as) audible. :)

wouldn't matter:p harddrive coolers all have fans. i guess unless you have a monster fan, its magnet isn't enough to bother the drive:p

put in a larger fan and run it a 7 volt, like a 120 mm fan at 7 volt is very quiet and it will still move a lot of air, for a cpu cooler there are some made now that will use an 80 mm fan,and you can by queit ones, like enermax, and others that are tmp sensing, and run slow and quiet till they gt hot...
go to cases/cooling forum and do a search...
this is why a lot of overclockers use Full size towers and at the top rear cut a 120mm fan,to move a lot of air,quietly...:)

Do you have any idea how an electric motor --any electric motor-- works?

(hint: electromagnetism)

Forgive me, for it is late. I tend to forget things at this hour

I have a 120 mm fan on the side of my case. I need a switch to turn it off and on, though, as well as a potentiometer to adjust the speed. It never lowers my CPU temp any, though. I'm also using a GC68 with an 80 mm fan. The box is pretty quiet, but hey, when we could all be having quiet mad-OCed systems, why not push for it?

So does anyone like my idea, or should we continue talking about hard drive cooling methods?

:p just cut holes all over ur case.. where ever a 120mm or 90mm fan will fit. 2-3 120mm fans and maybe you won't even need a cpu fan, i dunno:p

Alot of the noise of a fan comes from the tip of the fan. Wasn't there a fan that had no tips and was driven from the outside. It was suppose to be quieter for the same air pressure. I believe it to be a German company.
