i would take the moola back....less trouble that way, you'd always live in fear thinking that someones gonna come get you. its not like you could just start splashing out on things either..people would get suspiscious.

you would get caught in the end anyway...and asked to pay it back with interest!

I find a difference between stealing in a store and finding a bag full of money. Finders, keepers with the bag and shoplifting in the store are totally different in my mind.

I will agree with you that the guy is a role model for his actions....he's certainly a better man than I.

Your piss poor reasoning is the same the software thieves justify stealing from microsoft. "it does'nt really "hurt" them, they have 75billion in the bank, so I think I burn a disk". Theft is theft. Whether $20, $200, $2000, or $2M. You're just inventing this 850K limit because you know thier is signifigant risk to taking it..

Agreed. I hope we get a follow-up on this so we can see what the police department does for the guy. It would be great for them to set a good example to people that thoughtfulness is rewarded. It's not as if the officer left the cash like that because he was incompetent, he lost it while doing his job and responding to a call quickly.

I love how you keep assuming the reason for why I would return it. once again I have already said I would return the 20. You are the one who is coming up with this it doesn't really hurt them idea. when did I say $20 isn't theft? you are the one trying to justify taking 850k by saying "well all you guys would take 20, so its no different"

Yeah the source was pretty vague on what the money was for. Doesn't mention a bank or anything.

Yes, the casting of lots for divine inspiration :roll: Anyways, I would have returned the money, but not just for altruism's sake. It might have been a plant of marked bills, and then I get busted when I try to spend them.

You're probably right. The paranoia it would instill in me would probably drive me to insanity. Even though the bills are not trackable, I'd be wondering if there was witness who saw my car parked there. Every knock on the door would make my heart skip a beat.

Well, you have to have some crazy discipline and not go on a shopping spree. You'd kind of have to launder it in some way by taking it abroad and depositing it or converting it to jewellery. With the new financial tracking laws even that will be very hard to do. Ultimately you might have to just keep it in a safe deposit box and only take a few grand out every month.
 
I hope most people realize that in this case, keeping the money is not only unethical but illegal as well. If the money can be traceable back to the owner (which it was because of the checks), and you make no effort to return it but instead intend to keep it, then you can be convicted of theft.

Yea, you'd have to be an idiot to go on a shopping spree. I would have no problems with taking out a few thousand every month. It be like winning a small lottery and getting monthly payments.
