A crucial commodity, sand is found in everything:

1) Glass for new homes and buildings (think high rise buildings) and of course, cell phone glass (Gorilla glass, etc.).

2) Cement for roads and building structures

3) Phone/Computer/Car CPUs, and other electronics

4) Cosmetics, cleaning materials, abrasives

5) Used in production of consumer and industrial goods and chemicals / pharmaceuticals.

6) Oil fracking. Tons of sand is being stuffed underground.

According to the video, it takes 10 TONS of sand and gravel to make 1 TON of cement.

Sand near water bodies is more desirable and valuable than sand found in desserts because of the binding quality. Desert sand is too smooth and cannot be used for construction.
