An excellent article on SUV safety

I think Jules is right in hating on SUVs. I hate SUVs too, and think that SUV drivers in SoCal at least are:
1) Mostly women and therefore should be nowhere near a car in the first place
2) Obnoxious and mostly on their cell phone
3) Can't stay in their own lane to save their life.

But my best friend's dad owns an SUV so I can't hate too much.

As for "imports", yes, a lot of the Audis and BMWs and VWs in dealerships are manufactured in the United States by U.S. workers. Not to mention Toyota, Honda, etc.

Go figure.

see, everybody knows Jules... and he thought I was just stalking him... jigga please.

An excellent article. Note that no SUV garnered a 5 star safety rating in rollovers. 😉

Too bad they didn't rollover test the X5 just to shut you up.

Here they had a real rough time even getting the X6 to roll over off a ramp. The difference? 3 inches shorter than the X5.

Anyway, as the video states, there was no mandate to do rollover testing. The article you posted pointed to the fact that the vehicles are getting better as time passes seeing the focus on this. What then, will you have to argue about? Stay tuned...

Don't most of those lift kits come with a disclaimer that they are for "off-road use only" and warnings about how raising your vehicle makes it more prone to rollover?

I've never seen anything but the most extreme kits say they were for offroad only and quite a few lift kits are marketed more for cruising the mall than offroad. Anyone that has a clue about offroading is pretty conscious about how a lift affects a vehicle and sometimes less is more. A lower vehicle with taller tires, a wider stance, and more skid plates can end up being significantly more stable on road and off. JP magazine has been doing a while series on a 'no lift wrangler' where they're modifying it to fit massive tires without a lift.

In the next year my cherokee will be getting a lift. I'm thinking 4.5" inches so I can get 32" inch tires underneath them. Right now it scrapes too much when I'm offroad.

Meh. I was never big on body on frame SUV's anyway. The unibody car based ones are a much better vehicle for most buyers.

And coincidentally many of them have the same 4 star rollover rating as a Nissan Maxima.

Sure an Accord might get a 5 star rating, but I feel that the best safety feature in a car is between the seat and the steering wheel. Not anywhere else.

The Accord only gets 4 starts too. :Q

[edit] The list on the website that LTC8K6 posted appears to be a little outdated.

 There's a reason I hate them so much: Most of them are piloted by idiots.

In all seriousness, I call shens to some of the tire/rim upgrades, especially those provided by the manufacturer.

I can see what he is saying when you see some clown 'rollin' on 24's.

I was basically going to post this. Extreme (retarded) modifications like granny running around with 24's on her Durango make up a large majority of this particular statistic.

Interesting (and amusingly) enough, nation-wide African American's are three times as likely to file a lawsuit with the car maker for damages due to the loss of a loved one in a vehicle related death.

So yeah. Grillz and rims both kill, apparently.

Actually my wallet is, I lost my job in December, otherwise I would have. Sure would have been nice numerous times last January so I could actually drive somewhere without getting stuck.

Sorry to hear that. Hope you find work soon.
