Yes, the E21x0's are C2D's. However, thay buy.com page said nothing at all about that E2160 being a Pentium D.

Yes it's C2D, it's just stripped down. It's a 1.8Ghz, 1 MB L2 cache, 800Mhz chip. Good value, especially if you OC it a bit.

How much slower is it than C2D's ( assuming I OC it ) because of 1 Mb cache instead of 2 mb?

He's right though, the picture buy.com is showing says "Pentium D" on the box.

At any rate, E2xxx CPUs are based on the Core2 architecture, even if they aren't officially labeled Core2Duos.

I've read that the 1mg->2mb->4mb cache difference is roughly equal to 200mhz in clock speed. So the e21xx @ 3.4Ghz = e4xxx @ 3.2Ghz = e6xxx @ 3.0Ghz.

That is a good approximation, although it varies by what application you are using.

If youre going for value system, a well planned overclocked rig is a fantastic bang for buck.

The e2100 series lacks virtualization tech, but if you have a decent motherboard, you can ignore the 800 MHz bus rating. It's an artificially low rating.

Part of the confusion is that Intel is calling the e2xxx series the "Pentium Dual Core" series, which is easily confused with "dual-core Pentium D".

I wonder how that compares to the E1200 ? or the newer core 2 Celeron.

I saw some benchmarks on some of the upcoming E1600 Celeron and it was pretty close to the E2160. When are these coming out? I am not going to run out and buy one just yet. The point being it may be worth it to wait for upcoming .45nm low end processors.

512K vs 1Meg Cache ??

E8400 6M Cache??

Quad Core 8M Cache??

*shrug* I've bought dozens of things from Buy.com in that six month period without hassle. I see 228 reviews for that period...which is probably less than the total amount of orders they get in one minute.

Now mind you, I hate dealing with the huge eTailers like Buy.com if something goes wrong. It's far preferable to deal with the smaller shops, since you don't get some canned response that takes ages. But I think the number of complaints is probably a tiny percentage of the total orders they move. Also, they don't offer incentives and free stuff if you review them, unlike some other eTailers I could name, so a disproportionate # of reviews are going to be people complaining.

Yeah I agree, Buy.com really suck if something goes wrong and you have to deal with customer service. Otherwise, they're fine.
