Interesting that the author made the atheist assume that you have to be Christian in order to believe in GOD. Probably written by a christian, they often think they have a copyright on GOD, but hey just a joke....and funny one at that.

well if you really want to read into it
The grizzly bear only lives in North America where 77%(2001) of adults in the US and 83%(1991) in Canada identify themselves as Christian. Thus, in maintaining the simplicity of the joke and picking one god, it would be most correct to identify with the Christian god.

The atheist should have asked god to make the bear a priest. Then after enduring a little molestation he would have been free to go.
 Now that was funny!

Time Stopped.
The bear froze.
The forest was silent.
As a bright light shone upon the man, a voice came out of the sky. "...Am I to count you as a believer"?
The atheist looked directly into the light, "It would be hypocritical of me to suddenly ask you to treat me as a Christian now,"

That is where the joke falls apart. All his life, the atheist never saw any evidence that god exists, so he had no reason to believe. Then, suddenly all these unexplainable things happen and god himself starts talking to the atheist, now he has a valid reason to believe.
I don't see anything hypocritical about it at all.
