An anecdote: Why AnandTech's Politics & News forum is so worthless.

This is pretty sad (to me). Here is my story - that of an once-neutral post in Politics & News.

For a while now, I've kept harkening back to the pre-Iraq War II days where everyone, and I mean everyone, knew that WMD was in Iraq somewhere. The UN inspectors were ridiculed for their lacklustre performance in finding those weapons - and perhaps that wasn't their fault at all. So I did some Googling, and fought the tide of blog "news" posts crying out for Bush's head in my quest to find proof of my memories.

One day, I found that proof. And I posted it in this very forum, under the title, "What's with Hans Blix's new stance on Iraq?" I sat on edge for minutes waiting for people to be the better man and acknowledge that yes, even Blix himself once upon a time (a whole 2 years ago) hedged towards the side of Iraq having weapons, instead of the polar opposite he speaks of now.

My post garnered no responses.

Then I realized a truth that I already knew. Nobody in this fscking forum actually is looking for information or constructive dialog. They're just looking for posts that back up the views they've already solidified in their heads. As an experiment, I gave my thread a new, racier title. Instant responses shot down the pipeline. Much to my surprise (irony), not a single one acknowledged the facts stated in the original post. One mocked my bias. Another brilliant mind linked me to a silly Flash game. A third played a classic hand: Appealing to emotions rather than dealing with facts.

Why, I thought, do we even keep this forum around? People seem to register solely to post hate-filled in it which lacks even the amusement factor of the Off Topic forum. Then I remembered what one moderator told me in private early on - "It sure keeps the worst out of OT though, doesn't it?" Ingenious, mods. Ingenious. :D

A scant few are interested in actually expanding their knowledge and shaping their views with real information, but your assertion encompasses more than half of them, no doubt about it. It's because generally people are too lazy and/or stupid to see shades of gray, so they'd like to see things as right/wrong, black/white. It requires less thinking and makes the word a little easier to digest for them.

maybe because there's no cliff notes? almost the same reason why I didn't read the OP in this thread.

I find it useful in that people post news stories and editorials that I might not have otherwise found on my own. I'll skim through responses because every once and a while someone will make a good point that changes your perceptions of things.

It's a better forum to read than it is to participate in.

I don't do short posts. No offense intended, but if you can't take the time to read my post in its entirety I probably don't want to read your reply.

(You should take no offense because not everyone is the same kind of forum reader - not everyone is into long posts in OT or should have to be. But you'd think the informed minds of P&N would take the time.)

Among the crap of posters that are here and any other forums, you will find a handful of posts and threads that are worth while, it would be nice just to block the obvious trolls/nefs, but alas AT would become a wasteland. I think AT forums are a lot like the internet as a whole, there are some good sites, but you have to go through all the goat.sx and bangbus.com to get to them.

non-taken, I'm sure at lot of people in P&N have short attention spans (just like me). But I agree if you're gonna nef in P&N you should take the time to read posts, which is obviously not the case. .... which is also the reason why I'm not in P&N

so then quit yer bitchin' about no one responding to your thread :p

in my case, at least, I rarely venture past the front page in P&N looking for old posts.

You hit the nail on the head here. I've pointed this out many times, but people don't even listen to you when you tell them this! They all think that they are free thinkers who came up with their views on their own without being brainwashed by the media. Ironically, they will say this isn't true as they are visiting their conservative or liberal media website, or watching it on TV and criticizing anyone who gets their news from anywhere else.

Most of the people who post heavily in P/N are basically air-headed cheerleaders spewing off whatever particular dogma their respecitve party believes.

Yes, yes it does, and for that it's worth its weight in gold.

All we need now is for it to be "Politics, News, and Religious Bullshit" and we're set.:D

One of the many changes for the worse in political debate is how all sides now just spew out carefully-crafted PR campaigns with focus-group approved "talking points," with ad hominem attacks and distorted (and incomplete) facts used in place of actual discussion.

The Daily Show highlighted this for Republicans, with clips of elected officials and Fox partisans alike parroting the same soundbite-friendly "talking points" in an eerie chorus, but the Democrats are trying just as hard (if more ineptly) to replace individual thought with prefabricated party-speak.

Then the sheep of both parties wander into P&N and baa out their party points, without ever examining them for omissions or inconsistencies, or wondering why their party is always right 100% of the time when nothing else in their experience is.

Carry on P&N, toxic waste dump of AT!

yllus, at least it gives the loons a forum of their own.

I wade in there frequently, and am pretty much in a state of shock most of the time;)

Prob needs to be renamed the "Anarchist & Loon" Forum.

But hey, P&N got me over 10K posts finally:D

No offense, but it seems like your post is a year or two late so it's yet another fairly generic post, and you have a somewhat spiteful thread title and subtitle. I think that, and a section of the general population of P&N contributed to your thread's demise.

Results from searching for "war" and "WMD" in P&N:

http://forums.anandtech.com/me...2&threadid=1434506

http://forums.anandtech.com/me...2&threadid=1434375

http://forums.anandtech.com/me...2&threadid=1432507

http://forums.anandtech.com/me...2&threadid=1431732

http://forums.anandtech.com/me...2&threadid=1427486

That's within the last fifteen days or so, and with me being choosy. I get your point - the major discussion of WMD in Iraq is behind us - but the eight thousand posters who claim in every other post "there were no WMD in Iraq" will hopefully clam up for just a second having seen my post. At least until it floats off of page one.
