today i saw an amish woman (she was in her amish get up, thats how i knew she was amish) talking on a cell phone... whats up with that? i thought they didnt like technology?

Now this might be a HUGE stretch, but do you think it's possible that someone who wasn't Amish was dressed like one?

P.S. Nice weird Al reference, Spooner.

they can use it, as long as they don't own it.

or so that is what I have learned from the Amish living around here. They use power tools to make furniture, and ride in cars to go the doctors (other people own and drive the cars, and own the tools).

she was in fact amish, she was at the childrens hospital i am working at. there's a large population of the hospitals business that is amish, and she was indeed amish. its strange, b/c i also see amish watching television, and i assume they ride in cars b/c there are no horses and buggies outside. i was just wondering what the rules are...

Wired a few years back had an article on the amish and cell phones. It said that they have their English friends do the recharging for them.

The university I attended was in an area with a large Mennonite population. Some of them used no modern technology at all, some did not use it in their homes but would use it for farm activities such as electronic milking machines etc, and some drove cars etc and only dressed in the old manner. There seemed to be quite a variation in the beliefs and practices from what I could see.

Not all Amish shun all technology.

We have a settlement close by, and we had them build our cabinetes for our new house . . a task done by Amish people with power tools in an airconditioned shop.

Its not the tech they object to, its modern society. Some of them rejecet every facet of modernism as a result, and drive buggies and turn hand powered drills, but I think that most use modern stuff.
