It's a great movie, but the true story itself is just unreal. Very difficult to watch, but powerful.

Very good film. This is the only movie I've ever seen Ellen Page in where she wasn't basically playing the same character, a wiseass, precocious teen. Jack Ketchum wrote a book, The Girl Next Door, which was also based closely on the Likens case, and it too was made into a movie. An American Crime is better IMO.

its long

read it

A story about a borderline retarded mother overwhelmed by work and two retarded children is not a story about depravity. It's just sad.

I know the story is skewed to demonize the mother, but the clues as to what was really going on are in there.

I'd ignore the rottentomatoes reviews too if you're into that kind of thing..it only counted 7 reviews, of which 2 are foreigners, and at least two of the others were by guys who didn't seem to watch it at all..

the girl next door was better.

american crime was like the softened bullsh*t version that was an apologist story for the mom. and since it was ellen paige..well of course the visuals are nothing near. its pretty much glossed over. its based on a real story thats closer to the girl next door by a long shot. only problem with that story is the story mechanic of using the neighbor boy that didn't exist.
