EDIT: Sorry, Fujitsu Sold Out of this baby.

Still PO'ed that you missed out on the Wal-Mart laptop for $749? Well howz about this one:

Fujitsu Lifebook i-4177
500 Mhz Celeron Processor (100 Mhz System Bus)
12.1 TFT Active Matrix Display (800x600)
64 Megs of RAM (Expandable to 192 Megs)
6 Gig Hard Drive
8x DVD Drive
ATI Rage Mobility -P Video w/4 Megs of RAM
Yamaha 16-Bit Sound w/SPDIF Optical Digital Output
ALPS Touchpad
External USB Floppy Drive
2 USB Ports (Legacy Free)
S-Video Output
Built-in 56K Modem
2 PCMCIA Slots (2 Type II or 1 Type III; 32-Bit)
Lifebook Application Panel

You can get the *REFURBISHED* Model for $749 (recently dropped from $849) directly from Fujitsu here:

I personally own this laptop and it's very Sa-Weet!

PROS:
1) Optical Digital Output. Sadly, I can't seem to get it to output the Dolby Digital Signal for DVD though.

2) Made in Japan. Call me a Japanofile, but I think that says a lot.

3) Cool Looking!!!! To me it looks like a younger brother to the new Apple G4.

4) It's very quiet, even when the fan comes on (which is rare...this baby is efficently designed!). I have owned other notebooks that sound like hair dryers when the fan comes on.

CONS:
1) PCI Video. Don't ask me why, but they didn't go with AGP on this one. And it's even an ATI Video card with 4 Megs of dedicated RAM. I have not noticed this fact to affect DVD Playback at all. Alas, I don't play games so I can't comment on the performance there.

2) Legacy Free. NO Serial or Parallel Ports. I don't need 'em, so this is moot to me.

3) External USB Floppy. I don't care about this either, since I never use it anyway. Steve Jobs was right about this one anyway! (Interesting enough though, it is bootable from this external USB Drive, courtesy of the bios).

4) Maximum of 192 megs of RAM seems weak to me.

5) 90 Day Warranty. On this Refurb, that is. But you can make it a year if you add $89.

All in all, I recommend it. Check it out! :)

P.S. Someone previously mentioned this laptop in one of the other Wal-Mart threads, but I couldn't find his/her name so I couldn't credit them. They didn't mention it for this price though. :)

Hmm.... There is a Fujitsu Trade-In program too... Any brand!
But I bet they ain't gonna give me anything for my 486 junks...
Interesting though... Linked

This notebook seems to take DIMM SDRAM upgrade. i.e. cheaper to max it to 192MB

I think that's an honest review linked to above, except the speakers don't seem hissy to me at all. :\

The hard drive not upgradeable? That's funny, the i-4187 and i-4190 are the next two models up and they both have 10 gig hard drives. The reviewer was apparently misinformed.

I read another review that said this notebook has optical out AND in, which is also false. That would be very cool to have optical in though. I have several MiniDisc's that are screaming for a digital transfer to CDR. :)

Also, this notebook takes SODIMM Notebook Memory (I just upgraded mine with a 64 Meg SODIMM).

Hehe...Thanks Cejay...

Just some more thoughts...

As these laptop prices plunge.. I am so tempted to get one again. Used 4 different laptops b4.
As far as warranty, even new laptop got only 1 year warranty!!! So 90 days for a refurbished one, I can dig it these days. Especially, notebooks are LESS Fragile nowadays.

All I need to decided is whether to get this Fujitsu i-4177 with DVD or go FULL BLAST with those P3 with DVD,14"Tft and more ram ones from Dell. Prices are still around $1500. ( Compare to $3000-$4000 for a fully loaded notebook back then.)
Tempting...Tempting......

How would you connect a printer (non-usb) to this puppy?

BTW: They charge $32 shipping and sales tax to a bunch of states including NY, NJ.

A friend of mine just bought a Compaq refurbed laptop with pretty much these same specs, but with a 13" screen and it was ummmm 1000 i think. point being it is very very nice...dvd looks awesome on it...and this Fujitsu is 250 bucks cheaper. i know that compaq makes CRAPPY desktops, but i consider notebooks to be different...can't really build your own. anyway, 750 sounds good to me.

True Color is 32Bit (16Million colors...or something like that)

This laptop does 800X600 at 16 Million color according to the User Guide.

Still very very tempting.....and I missed the Walmart deal again..... :(

The battery is Lithium ion and rated for 3 hours ! ! !
Compare to others that rated for 2 hours or so...
So I believe you can watch a full DVD movie.

Any I am still being tempted!!!

I am looking for a wireless PC card too.
I think Intel sells a base station and a wireless PC Network Card.
May cost over $300?!?!?

I've gone ahead and taken the plunge. I've never owned a laptop before, but think it's about time. This'll be replacing the ePod that I just bought. I'll need to sell that one now. I'll be heading off to college next year, actually commuting. This will probably come in handy. Besides, my family can use it in the interim, and it'll also function as a DVD player.
