An alternative to divx_311_alpha (or something?)

My friend downloads alot of videos through P2P programs. However, he cannot view the .avi ones since most of them are compressed with the DIVX format. I tried helping him install the divx codec using that file divx_311alpha.zip (or .exe) or something like that. It crashed each time he tried to install it.

Is there an alternative player or an alternative way of installing the divx codec onto his computer? He does use Windows Media Player (I don't know what version). He's very computer illiterate so the process has to be simple and not time consuming.

There's an official divx 4.12 codec. I don't use it though cause it freezes my wmp.

Can't help ya with 3.11. I use it... but when it just crashes on install I don't really know if theres much you can do. A format might fix it but I'd try divx4 codec first.

edit: Hey, it's Christmas, I'll give ya a link. Link to download

Well...is DIVX 4.12 backwards compatible with DIVX 3.11 movies? I may just upgrade to 4.12 myself if it is cuz most of my movies are encoded in 3.11. ;)

But remember, I want my friend to be able to watch DIVX encoded stuff. He likes DragonBallZ and downloads alot of the episodes but alot of the DBZ stuff are all DIVX encoded AVIs.
