Well, like I said I am taking a trip this summer. I am going from Chicago to Denver around June 20. I have to then be in San Francisco by June 25. Then I will take the train home to Chicago. Anyone that has experience with Amtrak know the cheapest way to do this. I would also like a sleeping car on the way back but it is UBER expensive. The cheapest that I cna get the trip is $431. Anyone experience with Amtrak and suggestions would be appreciated.

Thanks

Good luck.

I thought it would be an adventure.

At 29, there are a lot of things in my life that I haven't done. Spending 4 days of my life on a train is one of them. Worst case seniaro: I have a story to tell.

Go to a travel agent.

I've had a better experience on my worst train trip than on my best flight. Plus there's something to be said for avoiding the security crap.

That's a good attitude to have then. I got my own story out of my Amtrak trip - it involved a heart attack, a stroke, a derailment, huge delays, and a guy singing opera in the dining car.

My family took Amtrak from Milwaukee to Seattle in July 2000, and it was a very nice experience. We stopped for a day at Glacier National Park and then got back on the train and continued through to Seattle. I've also taken Amtrak a number of times on shorter trips across the state. With gas prices rising higher and higher, it's becoming a lot more economical to do so, and being able to get up and walk around, visit the lounge car, etc. is very nice, compared to driving.

It does take a very long time, compared to flying, but there's something to be said for really getting to see the country on a long distance trip like that. Additionally, I know Amtrak has recently renovated most (if not all) the cars on the Empire Builder (Chicago <-> Seattle), and I would not be surprised if they've done the same to the other lines.

Is this the route that runs through St. Louis? Amtrak doesn't own those rails. They have to stop for freight trains. I took a train from Chicago to Kirkwood, first stop after St. Louis. We sat in St. Louis for three hours. I didn't have a cell phone to call my friends to tell them, so I politely asked the couple in front of me if I could use theirs to make a local call. The guy just rolled his eyes and motioned me back to my seat with his thumb like an umpire calling a runner out. Asshole. I farted in his face just as I got up to get off the train.

I traveled from Denver -> Philadelphia -> L.A. -> Denver on Amtrak. With a 1 year old, and no sleeping car.
It was a once in a lifetime experience because I'll sure as hell never do it again.
And, fwiw, it wasn't my idea, but that's a whole different story.

I've taken that trip 3 times. Well, not all the way to Chicago, I get on/off in Omaha or Lincoln Nebraska. But I've done most of that trip.

Amtrak is expensive. That is just the way it is. Pretty much the cost is equivalent to flying. Only do it if (a) you hate flying or (b) want an adventure.

Sleeping cars are not expensive if you like the slow cooked meals on the train. You have several eating options (1) bring your own food, (2) snack bar with some hot instant meals, or (3) slow cooked food in the diner car. The diner car will set you back $10-$20 a meal. So for 3 meals a day, you could be out $50 a day and more if you want wine. With a sleeper, all the meals are free. So basically, the free meals pays for the sleeper if you want to eat all your meals in the diner car. If you share a sleeper with a friend/family then you can even save money that way.

Note: to get the cheaper sleeper price, ask for the sleeper once you board. That is, buy a regular ticket, then ask to upgrade on the train. If a sleeper is empty, they'll gladly take your extra money for a big discount.

I hope for you the track repair in the Colorado mountains are finished. Last time I took that trip (late fall 2005), the track was under repair and we went through Montana instead. Trust me, the train through the Rockys is far more fun than through Montana.

Tips:
[*]Remember to bring your own blanket. The train can be cold sometimes and they charge you $10 for a blanket (plus you can only buy it during the meal hours, so if you need one at bedtime you aren't getting one).
[*]Bring a laptop and an extension cord (plugs are hard to come by) - movies are fun to watch on the train. The train does show some movies, but they can be hit or miss.
[*]Bring cards and play games with others on board to meet new people.
[*]I'm not a drinker (maybe twice a year I'll drink), but my brother brought a flask of Maker's Mark last time and it made the trip all the more interesting.
[*]Set up camp in the observation car as soon as you can. Full glass on both sides and sometimes on top. See all the scenery in 360° rotating chairs. Heck, I often sleep there all night. Much more room to lay down. The only bad part is the old ladies that wake up at 5 am and want to have loud discussions there instead of going to the social room below.
[*]Don't expect to arrive on time. Amtrak is about 50% of the time exactly on time. The other 50% of the time you'll be 6 hours off. Once I was in it and the train hit a truck of some guy who drove into an industrial site at night, parked on the tracks, and was loading the truck with stolen industrial goods. Lets just say the train was stopped for 6 hours.

Ty all for the info.

Yes Dullard, I will try that with the reg tik then upgrade. I am thinking that on my way out I will be excited so no need for a sleeper. After a couple of days in Denver and 2 weeks in San Fran at class I will be dead tired so I will try to upgrade on the way home.

And yes I am in the mood for an adventure. I am 29 and going to settle down soon so this might be one of my last chances to do something alone.

I am also going to try to play cards with as many people as possible. I play sheephead, Euchre, Cribbage, any type of poker, hearts, spades and rummy. Are there any other games that people would join in on an Amtrak train?

I've played poker and hearts with the strangers there. I guess any game is possible depending on who you meet.

Are you "certain" about that? yuck, yuck, yuck

Seriously though, I bet that you are the only one of your friends that have a story like that to tell.

If I had a quarter everytime somebody made that joke, I'd have a bagful of quarters to hit you with. :p

At the time it was a bit of PITA, but yeah, it's a good story to tell now. Go for it.

If you're a student you can get the Student Advantage card, which can save you some cash. It's like $20 for a year membership and has discounts to a lot of places.

Why not throw in a leg on Greyhound so you can say you've visited all four corners of hell?

I was looking at doing that to take the kids to Disneyland. The West Coast StarLight (StarLATE). They are working on the tracks so you have to get off the train, take an Amtrak bus and get on another train.

Oh and they are ALWAYS late so good luck getting a rental car whene you get there.

We wrote for info and got a coupon for half off a second ticket this spring/summer. Bring a friend and sleep in shifts.

Last time I rode Greyhound seats on the left side mostly had red hankerchiefs on them and the right all had blue. Bloods and Crips WTF.
