AMR slot

hi,i need to free up a pci slot currently being used by my usrobotics 56kv92 modem.I have looked all over for a asrockmr card ,which was supposed to be optional.Would this card,if it do exist,be as nice as the us robotics? If i go to dsl,i would also like to find a good sound card to stick in the AMR socket.Again i looked all over the net and i cannot locate a %$@# thing! Thanks!

Hi, The AMR slot is for half a modem only. The other half is already on the Mother Board. I have two in use found at the local Chicago Computers shows. You should be able to Google for AMR MODEM and come up with a source. MSI MBs used them so an MSI dealer would be a good place to look. Luck, Jim

Yesterday, looking for a REAL "hardware" modem for PCI, there was no local source I came up with. So I was googling and did see half a dozen of those AMR modems on auction at eBay for low starting bids, and no takers. If the one the last messager suggested he'd send to you for shipping costs doesn't work out, try eBay!

I have a Biostar MB with an AMR slot, but I was under the impression that an AMR would STILL be "half" of a modem even when it's complete, rather than being what I consider to be the only real modem, a "Hardware Modem", not a PCI communications device, otherwise known as a WinComm, or WinModem.

Could I have saved the cost of that real hardware modem? The AMR ones I saw at eBay were mighty inexpensive!

I think there are several standards for AMR modems so you need to get one that matches your mobo/chipset... Yup, they are cheap - for a reason. PC Cheaps and some others have started including them as a purchase incentive... :roll:

Hi, AMR Modem card is only the Ring Detector and very little else. Same as Tel Co. on the wall unit of about 30 yrs ago before Goverment made them quit it and gave the whole modem to us. The part of the modem on the Mother Bd is still Win (Software) Modem just like most of the others. Jim

That was my assumption from the start. I have used a couple of the cheap ones (I mean "PCI Communications Devices", generally), and they worked, but not well, and they soon began having problems. I bought a combination modem and router from Netgear, but it is way too optimistic to suit me!

It's way too willing to settle for second or third-best connections, like 28.8 or 33 whatever, and there's no easy way to either monitor the speed, or to force the device to disconnect and reconnect. So all that money was wasted. And so far, no locally accessible provider has an affordable cable internet or DSL rate.

Best idea is to get an external serial (RS-232 NOT USB) modem especially if you plan to run Linux or other OS eventually - they will definitely free up a PCI slot. They can be had for around.$20. now at several places: GearXS has the BestData (choose the "Upgrade to Retail Box" option to get the cables etc.) and Acortech has the Diamond Supra for $14. (even less in quantity) +sh.
. BestData owns the Diamond name now so they are both really from the same company.
