Amplifier versus Receiver

I've got a Hercules Gamesurround Fortissimo II two bookshelf speakers, a center, and two rear speakers. I don't want to spend more than 200-300 for what I want to do and I don't know whether to just get a 5.1 Receiver or an amp of some kind. I'm not having any luck finding amplifiers at local electronics places, so if you have any links to reliable cheap places that sell them, post them. For the amount of money I want to spend, and the fact that I have a single input, would I be better off with an amp or receiver. This is a small bedroom that I will be using this equipment with.

TIA

Well wait, if his soundcard is already 5.1 then it has analog outputs for each channel so what does he need a processor for?

Well, then he needs 5 amplifiers.
one for each speaker.

If I were you I'd just get a ~$250 Pioneer HT receiver. You're not gonna find better seperate amps cheaper then that.

I am trying to expalin to you that you ask the worng question.
I used the lawnmower example.

What you want to attach to a sound card are powered speakers.
"Computer" speakers are powered. If you have a 5.1 system, you have 5 individual amplifiers, usually inside the sub module.

so let's see...
You have the speakers and want to save money buy using them, ok reasonable idea.
however, you now need 5 amplifiers.
let's looks for a cheap AC one on the web.

Get a reciever. The only reasons to get an amp are if you can afford a nice multichannel or stereo amp for audiophile quality, or if you just need something to power two speakers effectively.

Since you have a 5.1 set of speakers, get a reciever. In addition, the reciever will give you DSP options which an amplifier will not.

Ahh, good catch. That's not the one I thought it was. Although, if you have a speaker that can handle 780 watts RMS, there you go. heeehhhe.

Look, he has the processor, his sound card, and the speakers.
He needs 5 amplifiers.
Now, that is goign to be pretty expensive, so I suggest that he simply buypowered computer speakers, even though he already has some speakers.

Why not just get a reciever? They aren't that expensive. Use the optical out on the sound card and you're set. I suggest getting something decent, though. Glen recommends a set of computer speakers which aren't too bad either. Definitely cheap nowadays. I say if you have the speakers already, just get a reciever that can power them decently. You definitely don't want to get amps as those get expensive real quick

If I were you, I would've just spent money on the Klipsch 5.1 multimedia system. There's not much computer stuff that requires high fidelity sound. Otherwise just go for the receiver. Leave the amps for the HT setup.
