Amoxicillin and penicillin: Does amoxicillin contain penicillin??

My friend is allergic to penicillin. I have a few samples of Augmentin XR which contains 1000mg of amoxicillin.

Anyone know if Augmentin XR contains penicillin?

Amoxicillin is very similar to penicillin. Most folks who are allergic to penicillin will also have problems with amoxicillin.

DON'T DO IT!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I am allergic to amoxacillin. No mold based drugs are allowed.

Other uses for Amoxicillin

Amoxicillin also is used occasionally to treat a chlamydia infection during pregnancy. Talk with your doctor about the possible risks of using this drug for your condition.

What special precautions should I follow?

Before taking amoxicillin,

tell your doctor and pharmacist if you are allergic to amoxicillin, penicillin, or any other drugs

DO NOT DO IT!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Penicillin is a family of drugs to which amoxicillin belongs.

Amoxicillin IS a penicillin.

If your friend is allergic, you may kill him or her!

PS, yes I am qualified to make this statement.

Hmm didn't know these 2 were that closely related. Very odd, as AFAIK penicillin still works for me, but I've been immune to Amoxicillin since about age 5 maybe earlier. Immune as in it doesn't cure anything - no more effect than water.

Old fashioned PCN is a potassium salt (known as Pen VK). Amoxicillin is a penicillin that has a somewhat broader spectrum of action, however is less potent. What you describe is not your immunity to the drug, but the microbes resistance to it.

Most antibiotics have no direct effect on you whatsoever.

You should have him take some if he wants to break out in hives all over his body.

That's what happened to me when my idiot doctor prescribed it to me years ago.

Why the hell would you have samples of perscription antibiotics? You are supposed to take the whole bottle of any antibiotics so I find it hard to believe that someone would hand out samples.

Stupid advice. He could DIE from anaphylaxis

If we don't manage to blow ourselves up before then, the human population of 200 years thanks you for helping to create the super bacterial strain that wipes everybody out because of your improper use of antibiotics.

God, another idiot. Breaking out in hives is the least he should worry about. Anaphylaxis will kill him.

Your doctor is not an idiot for having prescribed it to you. How the f*ck would he know that you're allergic to it unless you've experienced the reaction before and told him about it?!!

Except for killing off gastrointestinal flora and giving you diarrhea.......of course, there are other classes of antibiotics that have nasty side effects such as discoloring tooth enamel in children's developing teeth or making the skin hypersentsitive to the sun (Tetracycline), toxicity to kidneys, liver, etc., but you're getting into the big gun/esoteric antibiotics with those side effects.

When you know a nurse or doctor, or even have family of such then you get free samples of antibiotics(which Zpack has helped me when I've gotten sick all-of-the-sudden). I wasn't going to give it to him, he's really sick (bad cold/flu) doesn't have insurance, let alone money. He wanted to take it even though he knew he was allergic to penicillin, and all of the local pharmacists were closed. So, rather than giving them to him and being liable for anything that happened, I wanted to ask. I gave him what sutafed I had left and told him to sleep on it.

Again, I reiterate:
