amount of ram needed?

im building a new rig for gaming. My cousin says i only need 1 gig really (for xp) because only vista and a few games make use of 2gig of ram?

for day to day tasks and mild gaming with xp, 1gb is fine, but for very serious gaming/multitasking, 2gb is definitely recommended. also, 1gb is probably fine for regular old tasks in vista, but any gaming would require 2gb

I can tell the difference between a computer with 1gb of ram and 2gb of ram, it's a huge difference. Also I would recommend getting motherboard with DDR2 instead of the normal DDR ram. It runs smoother and theres less chance of any lockups.

I've checked it out to see what games need for ram, and even with nothing running in the background, games like warhammer mark of chaos, company of heroes, dark messiah, and supreme commander all use more than a gig on XP. 2 gig all the way.....

I would say that 2GB of RAM is almost the norm these days. You wil really notice the difference.
