amount of desktop memory - 128, 256, (..), 512?

In this RAM price heaven, it's tempting to pick up another stick for current or future use. Currently I have 2 X 128 = 256 MB. I was advised that I can't have too much memory for video editing. So, I plan to fill up one last memory slot available. I have seen a lot of people who have 128 or 256 or 512 MB system memory, but not many with 3 X 128 = 384 MB. Is there any technical reason for that? If so, does it mean I need to pick up 256MB rather than 128 MB? Thanks.
 
it doesn't matter, 128X3 or 128X2,

meanwhile, if you are into video editing, then I THINK you will want more than 256 mgs.
 
I just bought 3.3gigs of crucial memory 🙂 or around 3gig + 256mb...

512 for my CUSL2 x 2 and 1 Gig for my bx6r2s

It is ram heaven for me... 🙂
 
Some of the new motherboards have two slots for DDR and two slots for regular PC100/133. So, if you are buying PC100/133, you are best off getting a big stick rather than three or four medium sticks. In the future you will be hard pressed to find a motherboard with three or four slots for PC100/133.
 
One thing to note, is that obtaining CAS2 timings using more than 2 DIMM sticks becomes a lot less likely. The guys at Mushkin warned me of this; If you want maximum performance with massive amounts of ram, your best bet is to get CAS2 256meg sticks... I haven't seen any 512meg CAS2 sticks yet (though, that would RULE!)
