Amgen Tour of California

I'm watching the first stage I Tivo'd last night. It's a cycling race, probably the biggest cycling event in North America with all the big name teams who race in the Tour de France. I'm going to drive up to Redondo Beach next Sunday for the final stage and I'll shoot some pictures.

Bump for the morning crew since it got no love last night.

Team Discovery, Phonak, T-Mobile, CSC, Gerolsteiner are a few of the big name teams participating in this 600 mile race from Northern California to Souther California. ESPN2 is showing highlights of each day at 11PM PST.

I watched the prologue last night which was a 1.9 mile time trial. 1 mile flat and straight and then a .9 mile climb to the finish. Best time was by Levi Leipheimer at 4:57.

I mean seriously has to be the gayest sport ever invented, staring at guys in tight spandex pumping their legs up and down constantly.

It's probably way too manly for you.

Who are you rooting for? Levi Leipheimer is from California as are a few other riders (or at least they live in CA). Lots of Americans in the field.

The Governator presented Levi with the winner's jersey on Sunday.

Leipheimer is definitely up there for me. I mean, you gotta root for the old man who is still a great rider. 🙂

I think he is in his mid 30s right?

BTW, can you believe Jan Ullrich got a perm? Who does he think he is, David Hassellhoff. 😉

Definitely following. Or at least ReplayTVing. Going to watch the (stage) finish in Santa Barbara on Friday.

The new Team Discovery is interesting, they have a solid team, but no one that really outshines the rest.

I want Bobby Julich, from CSC, to do well this year. He is so young and he could be a great rider, and his start on the Tour of CA was almost as good as Levi's.

With all of the upstarters and old US people like Floyd Landis the Tour of CA is quite an exciting one. I haven't followed up too much on it, but I have looked at some highlights. Too bad I am too busy at work to go up to Cali. 🙁

Yeah, my wife thinks I'm nuts driving all the way up to Redondo Beach on Sunday (a whopping 85 miles) just to see a cycling race.

I may have to take my 4 year old son with me though if my wife is doing an open house.

You should ride your bike there 🙂

I can't, I have to take my son with me. I might bring the bike though and ride down from my Father-In-Law's house to the start/finish area and leave my son with them for a while.

Same here. I'd love to give a nudge to one of those a-holes riding their bikes in the middle of the road with my car but I'm not allowed to. 🙁
