Think they will drop the late fee if I call? I just forgot to pay and a week later I get a $29 late fee. Kinda sucks. I've been a customer for years (ever since blue came out) and have never missed a payment. Anyone know if this will negatively affect my credit score much or at all? I have a pretty high score and I don't wanna jack it up.

If you are not more than 30 days late, it will not affect your credit.

50/50 on whether or not they remove the late fee.

Pretty good chance though, since they're not a subprime lender like Capital One or First Premier.

if you are a good customer and / or get a CSR that's not an asshat, they should take it off.

I ran into this situation a few times while I was in school and my bill didn't come on time. Now I pay everything online so whether or not my bill is here I pay it....

The same goes for check bounce fees, they usually will go 50/50 on them if you get caught in a 'bounce train'. My worse was a $1000 check that a shop said they didn't get, so I took their word that they wouldn't cash it if it turned up....they did, both at the same time (the only transaction they did at that time) actually according to the branch :(. I got nailed with 10+ bounces, $300+....the shop totally acted as if they were not responsible, told me they just run all the checks down for deposit and don't pay attention to the amounts or who they were from ?!?!?, and told me a refund takes 30 business days (they were a very very small shop, not some corporation giant that has to go through redtape and accounting to issue refunds). The bad part about it all was the day after the bounces was when my next paycheck would have made it all ok....

Turns out they had financial problems and were doing this to quite a few people. It's not technically illegal as it was my fault I issued two checks and they were refunding the money within a period of time that was 'reasonable'. Anyways the bank decided to allow me a courtesy refund of half the bounce fees (actually not true bounces as they were paid, but still over drafted me).

I've had around 5 late fees (2 with Amex) and everytime I've called, they've been happy to drop the fee. Of course I still had to pay the finance charge but that's usually not too bad.

When you call you just ask for them to drop the late fee? Simple as that?

Just explain what happened...usually honesty is the best in these situations, especially if you have a great history of on-time or early payments. You could say the bill didn't come on time (a typical excuse I am sure though and very legitimate).

The other crappy thing about this is that now i'm $500 (the balance for that month) poorer than i thought I was. No idea how i missed the payment..i'm usually on the ball with this stuff.

It will not affect your credit, AMEX waits about 60 days before they send a report to a credit bureau. If you call there's a good chance they will refund your late fee. For better chances tell them why your payment was late.

I usually don't give a reason. I just say, "Hi, I was just wondering if you'd waive my late fee." and it works.

^^^ Yeah you don't have to, but if you start giving them an elaborate story about why your payment was late they usually just start to waive it before you ask just to shut you up. Of course you could just ask and get the same results.

If this is your first late charge, it is common industry practice to waive the first charge. Some companies have different polices regarding how many waives their CSRs are allowed to give, but -- if its the first one, you should have no problem

You can simply call them up and ask them to waive the charge as a one time courtesy. Works for over-the-limit charges as well -- and just about any other "penalty" charge from a financial institution.
