if you are a good customer and / or get a CSR that's not an asshat, they should take it off.
I ran into this situation a few times while I was in school and my bill didn't come on time. Now I pay everything online so whether or not my bill is here I pay it....
The same goes for check bounce fees, they usually will go 50/50 on them if you get caught in a 'bounce train'. My worse was a $1000 check that a shop said they didn't get, so I took their word that they wouldn't cash it if it turned up....they did, both at the same time (the only transaction they did at that time) actually according to the branch
. I got nailed with 10+ bounces, $300+....the shop totally acted as if they were not responsible, told me they just run all the checks down for deposit and don't pay attention to the amounts or who they were from ?!?!?, and told me a refund takes 30 business days (they were a very very small shop, not some corporation giant that has to go through redtape and accounting to issue refunds). The bad part about it all was the day after the bounces was when my next paycheck would have made it all ok....
Turns out they had financial problems and were doing this to quite a few people. It's not technically illegal as it was my fault I issued two checks and they were refunding the money within a period of time that was 'reasonable'. Anyways the bank decided to allow me a courtesy refund of half the bounce fees (actually not true bounces as they were paid, but still over drafted me).
