Amex "Blue" Buyer Assurance

I was looking to get a Rio Nitrus but Im hesitant in spending $150+ on an MP3 player with only a 90 day warranty. So then I remembered that my "blue" had some warranty program on it. It mentions something about doubling the warranty, but also about extending it an additional year. So would I get an additional 90 days, or a year of coverage? Also, has anyone ever taken advantage of this service and just wondering what kinda hassle it was should things go bad.

What do you mean by when things go bad ?

Like if you don't get the product ?

Or what ?

Buyers assurance is basically pricematching for the lowest price in 90 days in print or online.

It doubles the warranty UP TO one additional year of coverage. So if the manuf. warranty is 2 years, you only get 1 extra year.

In the case of the Rio, you get an additional 90 days.

And just FYI, 90% of low priced consumer electronics you buy will have a warranty period of 90 days. Even products with a 1 year warranty only offer partial coverage. Don't expect so much.

I never had to make a claim for warranty, but I had to make claims for other things from AMEX, like rental car insurance and a damaged product from shipping. Both times, the hassle was minimal, the CS was very friendly and sympathetic, and I got my money back. IMO, Amex is great, and you shouldn't consider using anything else to buy electronics.

Buyer's Assurance is the reason I keep my Amex. This program is the best. (The best, Jerry, the best!)

I've been using the card for about 3 yrs and have had to use the program a couple times. Every time it's been a positive exp. You call the 800 and they start the claim. In most cases you'll get a letter asking for some documentation-- copy of warranty, copy of receipt. Once the claim involved a problem with my dishwasher ... it wasn't clear what the problem was and I asked Amex if I could bring the Sears tech out (where I bought it) to diagnose. They authorized the service call fee. You submit all the documentation via fax or mail and soon afterward get a credit to your Amex or a check.

My understanding is that with the Amex program, if the manuf. warranty is less than a year they increase it up to a year ... so 90 days becomes 1 yr not 180 days. But check the fine print.

The folks on the cust. svc line for the program are very helpful and efficient.

I have this player, got it for christmas and am already in the process of doing the RMA for it............., mine kept turning off and randomly playing white noise at the maximum volume (the wierd thing was that pausing it and then hitting play resumed the song like nothing went wrong). I really hope that it is just my unit that is defective.


On the other hand, my brother is doing an RMA for his IPOD since the thing is stuck on Hold for some reason...

Anyone else have issues with the Nitrus?

I was also looking at the RCA Lyra RD2760. Both use the new Cornice Storage Element, which gives a good amount of space for the price.

I started looking at these units becasue they are cost effective and very "pocket friendly". I want something I can throw in my pocket and forget (not having to worry about moving parts would be nice). I would prefer a device without moving parts just for higher reliablity but units with 500+ Mb are fairly costly.

The Nitrus is supposed to have better battery life and thiner for your pocket, but only has a 90 day warranty. The Lyra has less battery power, a bit thicker, and a 1 year warranty.

Any opinions or additional feedback?

I don't know anything about the Rio, but have you looked into the Nomad Muvo2? Its only $188, which seems to be a much better deal than the Rio, especially if its known to have problems.
