Amerigas Propane Cylinder Exchange $2.50 Rebate (Blue Rhino $3 Rebate) (both valid through 12/31/09)

Walked by an Amerigas rack and saw a notice for a $2.50 rebate (valid through 12/31/09) on their "20" lb. propane cylinder exchange: http://amerigas.com/pdfs/Ameri...er-Exchange-Rebate.pdf

Pretty sure you can exchange competitor's cylinders at Amerigas and rebate should be valid as long as you can cut out Amerigas proof of purchase from new cylinder.

edit: Blue Rhino looks like they are offering $3 rebate http://bluerhino.com/br/TankEx...sandCoupons/index.html

(Blue Rhino wants original receipt, Amerigas Proof of Purchase seal off cylinder)

Moved at request of OP.

I think you can exchange an empty 20 lb. propane cylinder from a competitor, get an Amerigas cylinder, and just send in rebate with proof of purchase seal.

Offer is good if you buy full cylinder without exchange, too.

I always open up the vent screw to assure a full tank. when the tank nears full upon filling the attendant closes the vent.

Both companies put 15lbs into a 20lb tank.....in my region. I am a refiller, and still put a full 20lbs in a 20lb tank. Here in Canton, OH I charge $18 OTD, no rebates. Rebates on propane? No thanks!

Yeah, you can always get a better deal simply having your current tank refilled somewhere rather than swapping the tanks w/ AmeriGas or Blue Rhino. Unless your tank is rusting out or something, there really isn't any benefit from getting the new tank vs. just refilling the existing one.

My grill (a Weber Baby Q100) is a gas miser and I only need to refill once at year, at most.

For me, peace of mind that newly exchanged cylinder has been tested recently for leaks, etc. is worth extra cost. Empty cylinder at Sam's Club is over $20 and don't know if I would be comfortable using it over 10 years without some testing since it is exposed to elements year round.

Definitely agree that refilling own cylinder is much more economical for power propane grill user, though.

Actually, I got a defective tank from Blue Rhino through Lowes. Caught my grill on fire and nearly burned down my garden shed as a result. Lowes bought me a new grill, and the manager called me and told me that they had Blue Rhino take back their entire stock of tanks because it turned out they hadn't been replacing the valves on them like they claim to and they found 1 or 2 other faulty ones in their inventory.

So, just a word of caution that there may not be as much peace of mind as you'd like to think. I'd hope that my situation was an exception to the norm, but who knows.

OP: Thank you!

Now I am curious: is it then universal truth that you get 1/4 more gas when you refill at a refiller rather than swapping tanks? That's completely news to me, I bbq a LOT so 1/4 extra gas is of interest to me.

Just look on their label. It IS a 20lb tank, but will say something different on their label. Both companies used to be 17lb, but switched to 15lb here.

I never really paid attention to the weights, but, I did notice that the propane seemed to run out a lot quicker when I was doing the exchanges than when I started going ot the local refilling stations (different company). That's pretty crappy putting 15lbs in a 20lb tank, but if it was advertised as such I suppose it's my bad. I really don't believe that to be the case though.

Shouldda went to Strickland Propane where they specialize in only "propane and propane accessories" 😉
