Maybe it's just to prepare for carpet bombing by flights of B-52's. Probably not, though- America doesn't have the stomach for real imperialism.

Washington PostLooks like they're planning on replacing the Marines with Sunni Iraqis. Sounds good on paper, but I don't think I would put much faith in them.

Yes overnight they have found some Iraqi generals to run the new "Fallujah Protection Army". What a load of crap. I am not in favor of storming the city, but this basically says. Okay you win, we quit. What were all those lives lost for?

They could beat them but at what price ?

I truthfully think the entire April campaign was stupid and misguided. They should have just honored the 4 people that were killed and left the entire city to be run by the Islamic nazi's.

Iraqi's are just to much of cowards for Democracy.

I agree, the cowboy vengeance attitude got us no where fast in Fallujah, we got a boatload of casualties instead of justice. Those original perpetrators are probably still celebrating in some safe tunnel waiting for the marines to withdraw. All this operation resulted in is American lives and a whole lot of Iraqi lives.

April 1 (Bloomberg) -- U.S. commanders in Iraq are preparing to occupy Fallujah and carry out combat operations and civil- affairs rebuilding missions to defeat resistance after four American guards were killed and their dismembered bodies burned and displayed by residents in the town yesterday.

``We will be back in Fallujah,'' Brigadier General Mark Kimmitt said today in Baghdad about the U.S. Marines who operate in the area, according to a transcript. ``It will be at the time and the place of our choosing. We will hunt down the criminals. We will kill them or we will capture them. And we will pacify Fallujah.''

I think they finally realized what they should have known before they started their attack, the only way they would ever be able to occupy the town is to level every last building and kill anything that moves. No, we don't have the stomach for that and the entire world would rise up against us.

Not a good day.

No sense arguing against the left.

If you destroy the city, the left screams. If you try and reach a middle ground, the left screams. If you question what they would do, they say "I wouldn't be there in the first place". If you grant them that point, but then point out reality and ask what they would do, they wander off to another thread and ignore the question.

So that the Iraqis can be free and democratic and not having to worry about getting killed?

No sense arguing against the right.

If you warn them not escalate the situation, the right screams. If you try and reach a middle ground, the right screams. If you present evidence to clearly debunk a lie they try to sell to people, they wander off to another thread and ignore the evidence.

The reality being that the US wants their oil? Or that North Korea is treating their people like dirt but, unlike a country starved for 10 years, could actually put up a decent fight if the US started to mess aroun with them, so it was easier to use Saddam to show people how strong a nation they are?

Bread and games?

The North Koreans can kill 1 million S. Koreans and level the capital of Seoul if the US ever messed with them. The farmers might be starving for 10 years, but the 1 million strong army sure ain't. And Kim looks like he's gotten chubbier over the years.

Or they go off on a tangent about "oil" or "North Korea".

How come it took 16 posts till someone got it right and blamed the "left"?

It's just more of the failed policies of the Clinton Administration.

Blame anyone but W.

Someday, maybe people will begin to understand what democracy is and stop just throwing the term around to rationalize and justify their actions. You can't force democracy on people who don't want it... and trying/pretending to be doing so only means that you never fully understood or believed in democracy in the first place.

Helping to draw lines on a map and divide Britain's former colonies into made-up Middle-eastern and Far-eastern countries with puppet dictators installed was not democratic. Supporting the dividing of the Indian subcontinent into India, West Pakistan, and East Pakinstan and forcibly relocating millions from their homes to other regions was not democratic. Participating in a coup to oust the democratically-elected government of Iran, installing a brutal dictator in his place, and then protecting that brutal dictator from prosecution was not democratic. Defending the French colonization of "Indochina" and overturning/ignoring the wishes of the people who would have voted a opposing party into office because it didn't fit our vision of how things should be was not democratic. Tacitly supportly a military coup in Algeria because popular elections seemed certain to give power to the Islamic party was not democratic. Using bogus arguments about the military capabilities of a sovereign nation as an excuse to destabilize the region and then seeking to install a puppet government that will represent our own interests is not democratic. And seeking to stifle those who disagree with the administration (as we see in HeroOfPellinor's recent thread, and others) is not democratic.

I think it's time for an awful lot of people to go back to the books and gain a better understanding of what democracy is before they start throwing the term around so freely.

"Personally, I think, uh... they don't really want to be involved in this war. You know, I mean... they sort of took away our freedom and gave it to the, to the gookers, you know. But they don't want it. They'd rather be alive than free, I guess. Poor dumb bastards." - "Private Eightball," trying to explain why the Vietnamese resisted our attempts to give them democracy, in Full Metal Jacket
