America's Cup

JulesMaximus

Anyone following this? I watched the second round on Sunday and will be recording today's race. Was amazed at how fast these cup boats are. I used to race monohull sailboats but we couldn't achieve speeds anywhere near what these boats are doing.

9/14/13 - Today was incredible. The Kiwis nearly capsized and it cost them the race. Second race was called off.

About 29 minutes in you'll see the near capsize. Oracle had to tack to avoid colliding with the Kiwis, really awesome visual. I think Team Oracle would have won this race anyway, they were trading off the lead up to this point and it looked like Oracle had a definite advantage.

Even if you were a cup racer about 10 years ago, you would be going 1/4 the speed the cup racers are going now.

Everyone's impressed with the technology but I don't see anything remarkable going on, they're just foils with huge wing sails, they have a tiny envelope of wind speeds they can sail in.. I watched a couple of the preliminary races, but I'm just not interested in it. I can't relate to anything those guys are doing out there.

40 knots just by sailing?

I bet you saw the Grand Canyon, shrugged your shoulders and said, "eh?"

I clicked on this expecting Folgers. Because of my dislike of Folgers, because it tastes like Office Coffee, I'm going to go make myself some normal french roast coffee.

I take that back, I don't mean to poo poo it, there is some impressive technology in the materials. I just can't relate to it as a casual sailor the way I can relate to the NHL as a casual hockey player or the MLB as a casual softball player.

Compare it to baseball. When I field a ground ball at shortstop and throw to first base in my beer league softball game, I'm making essentially the same play that Derek Jeter makes. Am I as fast, or strong, or athletic? Of course not, but its much easier for me to understand what he's doing when I watch on TV.

Why not? Both types of sailing use the same exact concepts and use/fight the same exact forces. Exactly the same as comparing driving your daily driver vs. an F1 racer. True, the F1 race car is faster, can corner better, is quicker, but in the end, both the F1 race car and your Toyota Camry are doing the same exact thing only with different cornering forces, acceleration, etc., etc.

To be fair to the poster you are ribbing..... I prefered the 12 meter boats over this....
YES, they are CRAZY fast. And that is exciting.
I felt there was more tactics involved with the 12 meter boats.
When to pitch, when to tact... What sail to post......

Here.... Its let that 11 story foil catch the wind and HAVE AT IT.
Yes, there is some tactics here, I just felt it was moreso in 12 meter.

I watch some qualifying and I watched the first two races... I have YET to see a lead change.
that makes me go Meh......

Its crazy that adding weight in sailing is cheating. In the John Candy movie, Summer rental they had to throw stuff off the boat as she was too heavy. They didnt throw John off they just used his enormous pants as extra sail.

I agree but these boats are incredibly fast and challenging to sail. There was a lead change yesterday and major blunder by team Oracle that cost them the lead and the win. Of course, they postponed the second race. Looks like it will take a miracle for them to come back from this.

By the way, team New Zealand hit speeds in excess of 48 knots yesterday. That's over 50mph.

I loved the days of the spinnaker and I used to race on a 30' monohull boat on Lake Ontario so I can appreciate the skill needed to set and douse a sail like that a couple times during the course of a race. The timing at the start, when to tack, how to maximize the wind (of course, this hasn't changed).

I disagree. When the wind is behind one of our boats, we open up the sails. They never do that - their speed is so high that the apparent wind is always in front of them. They're foiling, which is its own set of challenges, our keelboats, outside of a spinnaker run with lots of wind, cannot plane.

I see F1 in a similar way; I'm not an F1 fan. I also disagree that the F1 car and a family sedan are doing the same thing. I don't have to accelerate my sedan to generate enough downforce to take a turn, I don't spin my tires to warm them up so they'll grip the road.

The event is getting interesting now Oracle has adjusted the boat and is competitive....great races today, 1 a piece!

Too little, too late.

With the two match penalties and the hole they're, it's a almost a foregone conclusion that Oracle will lose.

I've spent a good part of my life on and around sailboats, and I am impressed as hell with the speeds they get out of those big cats. On the other hand, try as I might, I can't muster up even a little love for these ungainly beasts. There's no poetry or soul or beauty in them at all. I really find it hard to care about which one of them wins.

I grew up in San Diego and the IACC yachts were the first ones I saw. I have a soft spot for those beasts. So sleek, yet you could see a lineage to a regular sailboat. These things look more like TIE fighters 😛

Do these new ones get the ginormous mainsails out? Haven't seen them yet in any of the pics or video. That was always a big part of the race was switching from upwind to downwind.
