Hey, my PC Gaming magazine came with a CD. On it is a full version of America's Army V1.9. Hear this game is good. I went to install it and they give you a brief description.

After some training missions, engage in brutal multiplayer combat!

To me that sounds like online play. I only have dialup so that's not an option. Is this a single player game too?

Thanks.

Nope, no single player. Online only. Even though you have dialup, there are plenty of players with dialup that play with no problems.

First post here. Was reading your post and I'm a 56k user also and thought of a username, lol. Anyways, I used to play America's Army around version 1.4 I think and it was one of the few games I could play online without much lag.

Really? No lag? How can that be? I played UT and such online all the time and if your ping was more than 300 you had problems. At this point, my ping is probably 300...seconds.

I guess I can give it a try. *shrug* Thank you.

I beta tested America's Army for about a year. I first started on dialup and it was never a problem at all (except for some disconnects) and was able to hold my own against players with faster connections most of the time. You'll need the latest patch, though, as 2.0 is the current version :)

Wow...how cool!! Thanks, Heretik!! I'll DL that patch! Do you think it'll work with the V1.9 I got with this free CD? I don't know if this is a special "PC Gaming" only version....

Yeah, patching it shouldn't be a problem. Your CD will most likely be the same 1.9 that was available online for download. It's a blast to play (especially if you've never played before) and even better if you can get some good teammates. Enjoy!

Don't get me wrong here. There is lag on America's Army playing it 56k, but after trying out countless games this is one of the smoothest running fps's i've played on 56k. The training can get a little aggrivating. Like you have to be almost perfect to get sniper rifles through training. But after that's all said and done it's really a fun shooter.

Get the update to 2.0.0a.

AA is playable with modem and is an AWESOME FPS shooter based on the latest UT engine. Yes, its multiplay online only.
The graphics, particle effects, etc. are good.
Check out the Videos the Army made for this game which includes Special Forces footage mixed with game footage:
Click Save As and download these:
AA Special Forces "Fast Trailer" 26.5MB
AA Special Forces "Slow Trailer" 26.5MB
They are different trailers with different footage and different (fast and slow style) music.

For new players, I recommend after you go through qualifications; open a map you want to play without connecting to a server and explore around so you know the map(s) so you don't look so much like a noob and being lost.
To do this, bring up the console with the tilde key (~), and type "open bridge_se", or "open sfcsar" for example (without the quotes of course).
Then at the console type "playerlock 0", to unlock, then you can walk around.
There are alot of other commands you can experiment with (when not connected to an online server), find them on the http://www.americasarmy.com site, probably in the forums.

BTW, This games developement is funded by the US Army till 2007 I do believe.

Just stay away from the Special Forces Hospital map if you're on dial-up. It lags like crazy at times even on broadband.
