Lately I've been looking for a more realistic shooter. I think I've found it:

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=VFNr2k1NiR4

:)

It's not like a shootfest like the COD or MOH games, you have control breathing for better aiming, and it appears that the developers of the game actually went through actual bootcamp.

Why isn't this game more popular than counter-strike?

Because it's been bug filled since AA3.0 was released. I played every iteration of AA and I have to say AA2.0-2.5 was the best.

It kinda sucks that they fired the original development team right after they released 3.0. After they did that the game kinda stagnated.

If you want realistic play Arma 2. Its the best infantry simulator you'll find out there in the world, nothing even remotely compares. You can learn the game in random public servers but really you should join a community in your geography/language that plays regularly. Its the only game I know that actually has weapon ballistics and scopes behaving semi realistically along with realistic radios, tanks, humvees, thousands of weapon choices, smoke grenades etc. There is just about everything in Arma 2. We even have the M203 launched cameras on a parachute.

We have quite a lot of maps, many of which are 100's of square kilometres.

Yea I remember playing it when it was out. I played a ton of it too for a year or so. I didn't like it too much after they did major updates to it though.

This. Doesn't help that the "community" is only playing the most retarded maps known to man (what is so great about Bridge Crossing?)

Hospital was a GREAT map. So was Mountain Pass SE. I played probably 3'000 hours of Americas' Army 2. They had lots of great maps, never liked bridge though, but it was popular.

But the army stopped supporting it, they took away all the public servers, then to really kill the game they made AA 3. That was terrible.

Anyway, I think Bad Company 2 is better than both, I could never go back to getting killed in the first minute and having to watch other players for the next 7-9 minutes finish the game. Yeah, no re-spawning in AA.

I was in a clan un the 2.0-2.5 days. It rocked. Then they added vehicles. And I quit playing. AA needs to die now. I do miss the old days.

BrightCandle, there's Arma 2 free, is that any good?

It will certainly introduce you to the game. But you can't mod it in the same way, and to pump up the realism you want to be playing with ACE + ACRE mods as a minimum. My community doesn't support Arma 2 Free but you should be able to play online with it on some of the servers.

I won't play it if nothing else because it's a recruitment tool for the military and I think we need less recruitment, not more. Don't want to support it.

Speak for yourself - and too bad. It's my opinion; it's gonna be posted. Ignore it.

..just like everyone else on the site does. Roger WilCo.

I think I'm going to go quote myself now. This was an awesome post, and I want everyone to know how awesome I am.

It's true. When I played there were real soldiers with special icons next to their name playing. They an icon for the different branches of the military etc. I would chat with some of these guys, One I remember was in South Korean US army base.

I never saw them recruit in online play, and I would have if they did it, I played so much. But I know they would send emails to their accounts. They never did that to me because I was older and a Canadian I suppose.

But there was a LOT of support for the real army in that game. Heads of clans that told me they had servers to support the army and the "cause". Gung ho types.

edit: Oh, and there was this player whose name was "George Bush Sucks Ass". LOL, he played regular for a good 6 months before an army admin cancelled his account.

ditto. I was in ^USA^ for a while. it was some of my best gaming. the clan ended up folding when WoW came out.

the game was great until vehicles got involved and then I stopped too. I really enjoyed the game for it not being a respawning bunny-hopping mess. favorite maps were CSAR, Pipeline SF, and Hospital.

I think I got banned from the USA hospital server... All I did was steal Havak Firest0m's name and start tking guys..

So you didn't like the giant helicopter they put on the landing pad in Hospital SE? LOL, that was too loud. I remember when they still had RPG's spam city. Once they took them away we figured out how to spam like pros with the 203.

When I started, there was no 100 honors, or just rumours. I can still remember when I saw my first 100 honor player. I went from 90 to 100 playing VIP in hospital.

I actually don't view it as that.

Like, COD and MOH and BF3 are a huge army commercials.

AA is a realistic simulation that has more *suck* than other FPS games.

I played for at least two years and I was prime recruitment age when I was playing and never got a message email or anything about it.

What a wasted opportunity for a recruiter. It's not like those guys have any morales, do tell the truth when you fill out your account? I'm not sure if I've ever put my real info online for anything.

I used to play this a LONG time ago, was an admin for a server that was snipers only on Bridge. Some good maps that I remember playing were Weapons Cache and Pipeline. I kinda miss it, maybe I'll download again to see if it still lives up to what it used to be...

Yeah, never saw any servicemen playing. I took it as a game, not recruitment. Like most people did.

I was in the [42nd] for a while - a drama filled clan that had some really fun moments, and some really shitty ones. Also, our competition teams were awful. Might I suggest not visiting the old website, either. It got hijacked (by me) and turned into something awesome. :sneaky:

I loved SF pipeline, Hospital was great, with good teams. Bridge was kinda cool too, as long as no one on the enemy team knew the right ways to fire the 203 in the first 15 seconds so that they'd blow everyone up right away. The urban map was awesome too. Also, one of the newer maps that had a town in it - can't remember what the name was. Town in middle, open land surrounding.

Actually, to hell with it. MOST OF AA WAS AWESOME. Then vehicles happened.

Yeah, I don't get why people call it an evil recruiting tool.

If any game is unethical, it's probably the Call of Duty series or really any game that showcases the glamour of war.

AA is actually one of the most ethical war games out there. Original versions forced you to go through virtual boot camp and it's mainly tactical simulation.

Probably because it was a recruiting tool.
