NEW YORK ? Music executives love to blame illegal downloading for their industry's woes. But based on the results of a new nationwide poll, they might want to look in the mirror.

Eighty percent of the respondents consider it stealing to download music for free without the copyright holder's permission, and 92 percent say they've never done it, according to the poll conducted for The Associated Press and Rolling Stone magazine.

Meanwhile, three-quarters of music fans say compact discs are too expensive, and 58 percent say music in general is getting worse.

hmm...i don't believe those polls, unless they just happened to poll that many people who really haven't.

i agree with the rest though.

Thats my main issue with downloading now, the quality from the mainstream sites is just awful.

10-12 for a CD? Heh, not in Alaska. Try ~$20 a pop unless you buy used, or some really obscure band. $20 for an hour of music is even more expensive per hour than a live concert. That's when there is something wrong with the picture.

FWIW I prefer downloading because of (a) the high price to buy; and (b) I don't have issues downloading crappy quality songs.

All of that, and people are sick of buying 10 tracks of crap for 1 or 2 good tracks.

To me it is just so much more convenient to dowload the music from the computer. I can get some reall good qualtiy music for so much less than buy in a store.

New York Times just had a similar article on this. It was referring to how Napster and iTunes-type sites are hurting the music industry's biggest sales: remastered catalogs of older bands and Greatest Hits collections. Now, people are just downloading the Greatest of the Greatest hits and the rest of the trash is rotting on the wayside.

Music Execs are just trying to keep the cash dinosaur they've been riding on for decades going...by any means necessary.

I'll buy even less music if the only way to get it is in an online and compressed form. At 0.99 a song it still seems too expensive. Maybe if I could get a complete CD for around $3 or $4 downloaded I would consider purchasing online, but to pay nearly the same price for something I get at the store.. which includes a nice shiny CD and a booklet.. I don't get it... at least for getting a full album.

Your reading comprehension is the suck. The article clearly says the opposite of what's in the tread title. The article says Americans would rather buy music than download, seeing as though 92% say they've never done it, and 80% consider it stealing. The only negative stat towards the music industry is the claim that 58% that say music in general is getting worse.

Uh wtf, do you throw away your cd's after listening to them once?

I prefer buying the music from iTunes or similar. I rarely listen to CDs directly and iTunes is generally anywhere from $2-$15 cheaper. Only when the price is similar will I buy the CD.

Biggest problem I have with today's DLable files is DRM. If I can't view it in 20 years, I don't own it.

I'd rather pay for the cd for better quality than some compressed 128kbps song.

I bought a bunch of songs off a site; apparently they either changed management or went out of business. I recently had to re-format, and lost the license files. Now I can't play them.

If there was a legal music store offering 192 kbps quality or better music, I'd be all over it (Please tell me if there is). My ears aren't discerning enough to tell the difference between that and higher quality on most songs, but not 128. So I settle for listening to internet radio.
