The reason "America", and by that I mean the networks that would show it, don't like soccer is because there is no time to insert commercials. You get 50 minutes of uninterrupted game, 15 minutes of commercials and commentary, and another 50 minutes of game. Unlike football, where ever other play results in a commercial break.

Yes, that sums it up. Everything in America, including sports, has been so utterly commercialized.

I knew this guy who played American Football at a very decent level (college level) back in his days, and yet he could barely stand to watch NFL or go to a NFL game, for the same reason.

nothing happens "faster" in soccer than it does in football as far as the "action" goes. football is blazing fast. and there is a lot of "action" going on between plays in football, it's just the same type of "action" that is happening in a chess game. there is also a lot of "action" that goes on on the field before the ball is actually snapped in football.

Some of that is fair, the part about between-play strategizing, but I still disagree that football and soccer are equivalent in terms of the level of action. Not even close, imo. I would put hockey, soccer, and basketball in one category, and football and baseball in another.

Half the clock time in soccer is spent with some chucklehead writhing in agony after someone lightly brushed him.

Dude, that's acting. It's a key part of these fast, close contact games. Opportunities to get a foul called on your opponent come several per minute. You have to be prepared at all times to throw yourself convincingly onto the pitch or rink and make it look good.

The problem is people think every play in football constitutes action, where action in soccer is only things like shots on goal, or runs and such. They are used to "this is the play, sprint through it and we will come up with a new one" rather than "move the ball around until a play can develop and attack" that is soccer.

The lack of commercials is the biggest reason the networks would never promote soccer here. Unless of course the rules are modified so that the manager calls for time outs every thirty seconds or so, like the unbearable 4th quarter of an NBA game.

That is what really pisses me off about the NBA. Close game in the 4th and it is 20 second of play followed by 1-2 minutes of commercial for the last 5 or so minutes of the game. Or, it is a bunch of fouls. I get the strategy, I just fucking hate the commercials.

Another reason I believe soccer won't take off is because the best leagues and teams don't play at prime time in the US. English Premier League is broadcast, however, it is in the morning in the US, so few people can actually watch it. Therefore, they won't follow it.

Yup, I gave up. I like basketball actually but there is only so much commercialization and bastardization of something a person can take. There are always alternatives, things to do or things to watch.

It blows my mind how in America there is MILLIONS and MILLIONS quite successful people that are completely stupid and out of their minds.

This doesn't happen around the world (to an extent) just not as much/on this scale.

If they would swap the commercials out for uniforms filled with advertisements (similar to soccer), it would be much better. Plaster the athletes with "Pepsi" and "GEICO" and call it a day. Hell, they could even have sponsors for moves and places on the court. "He shoots from beyond the Coke 3 point line" or "Lebron steps up the Hyundai Free throw line".

It has nothing to do with the absence of commercial air time. Epl and mls already have major network deals.

Soccer simply isn't as popular in the U.S. as it it is globally for the time being. That's on the people, not the networks.

I know what you're saying. When I went in person to watch a game, those time outs/half time/stoppages go by so much faster.

Haha.. Funny you'd say that. I was having this conversation with an Indian guy a few months ago. Over there in cricket, in their franchise league, the commentators are already doing that.

Like, that was a great (product name) shot. That is a fine (product name).. Whatever the term is for the equivalent of home run in cricket. The guy was so pissed off :)

That article is pretty funny in places. All it is really is Anne Coulter reminding us that she's still around though. If she let a week go by without saying something inflammatory people might think she died or something.

she'd have a better argument attributing rise of soccer popularity to the decline of US economy; i.e. soccer is popular throughout the world because poor people can play it

Ann Coulter is an idiot.

Plus, she has a new book out and she has a history of saying stupid shit to get attention.

Don't pay attention to her and hopefully she'll go away.

Trying but you bumped a 4 day old thread :colbert:

I simply refuse to watch football live anymore.

And when I watch it on DVR it's literally 10-15 min of action, takes me about 15-20 min to fast forward all the ads/BS.

Sad, really sad.

But at the same time, where would American economy be without consumerism/American consumer?

Hmmm

I'll never forget the first time I went to a nationally televised NFL game. There were a bunch of times during the game where everyone was just standing around doing nothing... waiting for the commercial break to end so they could resume play. Fucking ridiculous.
