Americans (or NYCers in particular): Could you sleep in a capsule hotel? [pics]

I figure NYC is as close to Tokyo as we've got here in the States. I was wondering if Americans would be too claustrophobic to sleep in those little capsule hotels, or maybe something bigger, and with more soundproofing.

I think the dimensions for a capsule hotel room are around 1 meter x 1m x 2m (3+ ft wide x 3+ft high x 6.5ft long).

Would you be able to sleep in something nice and padded that measured, say, 4 ft wide x 7 ft high x 8 feet long that had an extra-long twin bed in it?

Nope.

I enjoy my privacy, and sharing a washroom/shower would be like going back to university.

The one in the second pic isn't that bad, but the first one reminds me too much of a morgue...no thanks!

Also, if it had better be super cheap, like less than $10/night.

Do they come with the "magic fingers" massaging beds you know the coin operated beds...?

Kinda like a hi-tech tent.

I guess Americans tend to use a hotel for more than just sleeping: we'll watch TV and hang out in a hotel room waiting for business or whatever events we're traveling for. That wouldn't work in a capsule hotel. I think the analogy to a tent is probably pretty appropriate.

(Please, no comments about other things we'd use a hotel room for.)

if you want to experience japan that's one of the fav places to live..

The last time i stopped by "tokyo" I wanted to stay there but thanks to my airline putting me up in a normal hotel I coudlnt stay in that place.

But I will want to stay there.. definately..

They look like kennels.

LOL! I remember that Seinfeld episode. The one where Kramer puts those Japanese guys in the dresser? That was hilarious!

It'd have something a bit longer than a normal twin and the same width.

So I wonder if there is capsule service. And what happens if Amnesiac 2.0 brings a hooker back to his capsule. how in the hell do you sleep with that going on.

I figured a lot of people would have problems with sleeping in such a small space. I figured with a [much] higher ceiling and a bit longer and wider room people would feel less claustrophobic.

hmmm.....I dunno, i think I could do it, especially since I don't move at all when I sleep, but I don't know if I could stand seeing the walls and ceiling so close, on all sides. I don't really think I'll find out soon tho. :)

At first it looks shocking but upon further consideration it's not that bad. I'm not the type for a communal shower but I could sleep in a place that small. When I was in Japan we stayed in a regular hotel room thankfully :) Regular size and everything :D
