American support for the IRA

I was curious on the current views of 'Irish' americans who support the IRA. How can you now justify supplying funding to a terrorist organisation while waging a 'War on terror'?

I'd prefer a 401K but, if I must an IRA will do.
Do the British fund any unionist efforts? they don't have IRA's over there do they. I'm big on union efforts. In fact, many years ago I was a steward... well I'd have been one if the name change from adoption hadn't occured. I don't know anyone who would admit to funding an IRA let alone justify it.

I assume you believe the New IRA to be terrorists and the British Army to be jackel hanger ons. I think the IRA are ununiformed Irish army members defending the rights of the ten or twenty who support them in the North of Ireland. Maybe.

Has the IRA been designated a Foreign Terrorist Organization by the State Department, making it illegal for Americans to provide donations or support?

Never mind, found it, looks like "Real IRA" is on the list, but the regular ol' IRA is OK.

wonder why the PLO is not on there, to me they are the same as teh IRA, just differant countries.

Im just wondering whom you are speaking too. Do you have names and addresses of the people from the US who support them? Are your "Intelligence" agencies as thorough as ours? If so I'd be personally worried about that.

I've heard of weapons being shipped to the IRA in the past (Thompson submachine guns) from private citizens in the US but nothing recently, just a lot of people mouthing off of how great they are. I do hear a lot about the IRA training and aiding other terrorist groups a quick search through news articles would confirm this. The IRA are not freedom fighters. They are murderers who train other murderers. I wonder when Bush is going to take his "war on terrorism" to them, or he believes terrorist can only belong to a certain religious group which I will leave unmentioned.

US redesignates Real IRA a terrorist organization

May 13,2003

WASHINGTON (AFP) - The United States redesignated the Real Irish Republican Army a "foreign terrorist organization" renewing financial and travel restrictions on the group's members.

The move prevents the designation, first adopted two years ago, from expiring as it had been due to on May 16, the State Department said.

"It was about to expire," deputy department spokesman Philip Reeker told reporters. "During the past two years they (the Real IRA) have continued their terrorist activities."

US sanctions against the Real IRA, the dissident Irish republican group blamed for the single worst terrorist attack in Northern Ireland, were first imposed by Secretary of State Colin Powell (news - web sites) in May 2001 following pressure from the British and Irish governments.

Those sanctions froze the group's assets in the United States and barred visas for Real IRA members. In addition, it made it illegal for people in the United States to give cash to the group, a main source of its income.
