For the full year of 2002, AMR reported a net loss of $3.5 billion after special items and $2 billion before special items. Southwest Airlines reported an income of $32.4 million for their 30th consecutive year of profitability.

Fourth-quarter losses for AMR were $529 million or -$3.39 a share. Southwests financial reports for the fourth-quarter are much different, with a net income of $42.4 million, or an increase of $.05 a share.

Ok, so Southwest didn't make a killing, they did however make a profit for the 30th year in a row.

Why American hasn't learned from Southwest's example is beyond me...

You've brought up a good point. I've flown on plenty of $1,300 American Airline domestic flights. What was American doing with all that money?

southwesst is a very well run company. The standardize on boeing 737,767 planes has stocking parts common to both saves money, plus mechanics do not have to be trained to learn the larger variety of planes. People who work for southwest are generally very happy with the company.

SWA, I thought I might also point out, has also been major accident-free for all those 30 years. They have had no fatalities and only one accident in all their 36 years in which a plane was damaged beyond repair, on 3/5/2000 when the pilot landed too fast and ran the plane off the end of the runway in Burbank. Pilot error was cited and the pilot was fired. No other airline has anything even close to resembling SWA's safety record.

Southwest is the master of efficiency in the airline industry. They fly one model of plane (Boeing 737) to reduce maintenance costs, they offer cheap no frills flights, and hey, they treat their employees well (from what I've heard). Southwest is a kick ass airline for those of us who can't afford 1st class (or who's job's don't provide for it)

One thing I wonder about is, how much does a domestic flight cost an airline vs a trans atlantic flight or a trans pacific for that matter.

Brings up an interesting thought....I'd like to see American's accident history. Granted they fly way more flights.
