The majority of people on the whole stinkin' planet are stupid. Don't single out the U.S.
I know it's popular to blame all the world's ills on the United States, but, take a good long look around.
You think people are smarter in Europe? Scandinavia? The Middle East? Asia?
Please. If you believe that, you are the stupidest one of all.

EDIT: BTW, I'm pretty sure you could get 20% of the population to believe that Mickey Mouse is real and time-shares a condo in Miami with the right PR firm.

If you think that the low intelligence levels, and poor education systems of some third world or developing nation should diminish the faults of the US, then you, my freaky friend, are the most ignorant of all. It isn't wrong to expect a lot better from an industrialized nation claiming to be a "super power".

Ok, I'm not your friend, because you are an Anti-American bigot. Let's get that straight.
The only real ignorance is in the purpetuation of class envy of which are guilty. What the hell does a nation being industrialized have to do with the average intelligence of people? Why should our status as a super power mean that the average citizen in the U.S. be any different from the average citizen anywhere? What you're essentially saying is that the U.S. citizen is superior to the rest of the world and any failings, which may be acceptable elsewhere due to thier inherent inferiority, are totally inexcusable. That logic is really quite crazy.

Anti-American bigot?, as opposed to a pro-American bigot, like yourself, that cannot accept the harsh reality that the US is, in general, a "dumb" country. I've seen figures that show the majority of Americans can't find their own state on a map. This is inexcusable in a modern industrial nation. I would expect that same level of ignorance in some war torn african nation where schooling is unavailable and most information is spread by word of mouth and rumor rather than newspapers, televisions and computers or other sources that can be verified. There is no excuse for this level of ignorance in the US so stop searching for one for yourself.

You still don't see my point, do you? People are people, man. To say that a persons geographic location has anything to do with thier intelligence level is nuts. A human beings intelligence level is hard wired at birth. Just because they live in a technologically advanced nation does not preclude stupidity. France is modern nation. Russia is a modern nation. They shouldn't have any stupid people either then, by your logic. What about those idiots who spray painted "Take your garbage home" on the allied cemetary? The whole world is "Dumb" and if you can't accept that, I hope that bashing the US makes you feel better about yourself.

Well, it's good to see that your educational system has given you the ability to carry on intelligent discourse without having to resort to petty insults. I am impressed.

Of course it should be expected that the average American is more knowledgeable and educated than the majority of other countries.

Why this simple concept isn't understood indicates perhaps that this expectation is too challenging.

I think that there are 2 big reasons why we see people as highlighted in the initial post. One is that far too many people seem to adopt opinions rather than form them. It is probably a sad failing of our schools that many people today have no concept of how think. They lack the skills to collect and evaluate information and to use this to form a defensible opinion. There is also a lack of motivation as they are never taught that anything beyond there own little microcosm of the universe is important; the "If it dosen't affect me personally, it's not my problem." kind of attitude. So, if they hear Joe say that the bad guys are defininetly going to use gas and germs on our guys and they hear a few references to WMD during the combat phase, they, in retrospect, conclude that they must have been used. These conclusions are facilitated by the second problem, which is that people are too busy with trivial things today to expend much time and energy on anything important if it is not biting them on the ass at the moment. People spend more time now than ever before on personal entertainment. And it has to be easy and immediate as well. Flip the channel or drop in the video game, don't make a trip to the library to get a book. And parents seem to be quick to sign their kids up for activities where they can be dropped off and left under the supervision of others. I believe it is better to take your kids to art, science, and historical museums than soccor practice. Of course you then have to be prepared if they happen to start thinking and ask questions. We have become too busy to allow all but small tidbits of news to reach us and seem to be unwilling to learn new things. The jokes about the VCR flashing 12:00 are all too often based on reality. Not too hard to learn, but why bother? As ill informed as many people are, some vote and are raising kids who will be even less informed and some of them will vote too. Change is needed, but I don't yet know how it would best be implemented. The schools and the media do seem to be off course.

From your own link:

While Bush critics see an effort to mislead the public, some analysts say Bush has been following a long presidential history of framing a foreign crisis for maximum domestic benefit.

''I'm not going to defend the president, but a policy of preemptive attacks sure looks better after this country has been hit hard,'' said Sam Popkin, a polling expert at the University of California at San Diego who has advised Democratic candidates.
Point? I haven't seen anyone suggest Bush was the first president to lie to America. In fact, I seem to remember that we impeached a president for "lying", and he didn't even kill anyone.

Do you not recall what Clinton did several days before the Monica trial?

But either way, he didn't free some 22 million people from suffering and oppression either.

Gee, if it weren't for them pesky little laws and all we could go about ending the oppression of all sorts of folks.. well the laws and the nukes that some of them have. Sovereign used to mean sovereign like it says in 1441 and HRJR 114 where they agree to the sovereignty of Iraq and others.

not buying that poll, just saw another one that was asking about skepticism over WMD, seemed the majority of respondents were right on top of things. This has been an ongoing poll to track changes in attitude, never once did I see this complete lack of knowledge over basic facts.

The poll at the start of the thread had to do with the knowledge of facts. A poll describing "skepticism over WMD" sounds like it addressed perception or opinion.

''It's a striking finding,'' said Steve Kull, director of the Program on International Policy Attitudes at the University of Maryland, which asked the weapons questions during a May 14-18 poll of 1,256 respondents.

Polls show strong support for Bush and the war, although 40 percent in the May survey found U.S. officials were ''misleading'' in some of their justifications for war. A majority, 55 percent, said they were not misleading.

''People supported the war for national security reasons and that shifted to humanitarian reasons when they saw evidence of Saddam's atrocities,'' said Republican strategist Frank Luntz. ``There's an assumption these weapons will be found because this guy was doing so many bad things.''

One day they will find something somewhere. Yep. Bush said it, I believe it, and that settles it.

Umm, no. That's why we have things like school. I highly recommend it.

You can train a squirrel to water-ski. Would you let him drive the boat? My point is, there are a percentage of individuals among us that have a practical (notice, I said practical) limit to the amount of information they can process at any given time. Until we perfect Nano-tech, that is an unfortunate fact. For stupid people, education is a band-aid...not a miracle cure. Maybe you ought to hit the books a little harder before posting snide little comments like that one.
