Buffy star set for game-to-film adaptation.

June 21, 2005 - The long-in-development movie adaptation of American McGee's Alice is finally moving forward with none other than Buffy star Sarah Michelle Gellar in the lead role. The Hollywood Reporter reveals that Universal Pictures has just signed Gellar to topline their big-screen take on the hit EA videogame ? a gothic-horror version of Lewis Carroll's Alice in Wonderland.

Marcus Nispel, helmer of the recent redo of The Texas Chainsaw Massacre, will reportedly direct the film.

Jon and Erich Hoeber wrote the most recent draft of the screenplay, but it's not known if theirs will be the basis for the shooting script. Way back in 2001, when the project was based at Dimension, John August was hired to flesh out the film's story.

The basic premise of Alice goes a little something like this: Alice, a disturbed young woman, is sent to a mental hospital after her parents are killed in a fire. She then returns to Wonderland, a dark and threatening place of looking glasses, mysterious potions, nonsensical tea parties and talking animals, confronting her fears and the wicked Queen of Hearts.

Horror helmer Wes Craven was previously attached to produce and direct and Milla Jovovich once talked herself up for the lead. Christian Ricci was also rumored to be linked to the project at one point. Now, with Gellar set to star and director Nispel firmly in place, the project can finally move forward. We'll keep you posted on the latest moves here on IGN.

*Awesome*. I keep hoping they'll do a Buffy/Angel movie soon though! The ending to Angel was such a f*cked up way to go out! :)

I really hope McGee is going to be extensively involved in this project... or better yet, I hope he is scripting the whole damn thing :).

I have this game but never played it through. The game atmosphere was eery and interesting but for some reason the game play kind of bored me. Maybe I'll have to try it again.

The game is awesome. I've heard about the movie a long time ago, though. It will probably never happen.

Sometimes, yes. She's one of those actors who, like William Shatner, needs *good direction*, then she can do really great stuff. She did a *lot* of very powerful stuff during the 7 seasons of Buffy (a huge chunk of which was during seasons 2, 3 and 5). The only concern I'd really have is that she's a little old for Alice.

I remember playing this game back in the day, it was pretty freaking sweet. Any free versions of it or really cheap versions?

A movie based on an utterly crap video game?

They must be handing out bags of money to anyone with a movie proposal these days.

Little kids giggling and laughing in that insane asylum! First time I came to that area I knew this game was going to be crazy.
