These artists are getting screwed, I thought Harvey may like this

1. "the producers can record any and all behavior of the contestant "in and in connection with the series" and use the contestant's likeness, voice and any or all biographical material, whether true or false, any way they want to. The producers own all this material forever and "throughout the universe."

2. "Absolutely all information regarding the show and this contract is confidential. If the contestant breaches this confidentiality it will cause damages assumed to be in excess of $5 million. The producers can recover such damages, anything gained by the contestant from such a disclosure, the contestant's winnings from the show and any actual additional damages caused by the disclosure."

3. "Each of the 10 finalists was required to enter into agreements exclusively with 19 Recordings as recording artist; 19 Merchandising for advertising, endorsements, sponsorships and merchandising; and 19 Management for the management of his or her career. All this was entirely at the option of the 19 companies, save for the winner, who was guaranteed this result. "

4. "This one's amazing. Basically, if I win "American Idol," I promise to appear on the "World Idol" show -- for a total fee of $1,400! All the provisions of this contract will apply to that show as well. "

Yep, they get screwed, but they have no other choice. There aren't many ways to go from being a waitress to a celebrity in two months' time.

Edit: not that I'm justifying their becoming indentured servants. I'm just saying TPTB hold all the cards.

Sure, the agrements are harsh but, these guys would be doing what right now?
Kelly Clarkson would be doing what still ? Waitressing ?

Even if you're talented, it takes alot of luck to make it in the music business.
These guys shouldn't be auditioning if they don't like what are presented to them, simple as that.

I don't care what you were before, #1 is basically signing your life away. They can call you names, sell false info to newspapers, or basically just ruin your life and there is nothing you can do about it. I guess it's just typical that stupid people would just sign anything and complain about it later.

Yup They said it was a take it or leave it deal and 10,000 peoples decided to take it:)

I thought it was interesting in light of on-going RIAA posts as an inside to the ugly side of becomming an artist.

as far as I am concerned American Idol can't die soon enough :|

Reality shows are a stupid idea. When I am looking for entertainment I wanna be as far away from reality as possible.

Didn't you know that is the standard Recording Industry Monopoly contract? Downloading music you bought and paid for is bad because it steals two pennies away from the artist while the industry steals the rest. All contracts are like this, Hillary Rosen loves the music, really!

but she loves the money more Hitllary "3rd Reich" Rosen

Hehe... my wife is like this. I like "real crime dramas", "reality shows" save survivor and movies like pulp fiction. She all about wanting fluff and happy endings.:p

Reality shows are a good idea, if they stick to reality, only to show us as the monkeys we are.

I don't even care about happy ending. Survivor is not too bad but following are the shows only meant for housewives and losers..

Bachelor
Bachelorrete
American Idol
Joe millionaire
Who wants to marry a millionaire
Married By America
Mr. Personality
...etc.

Come on this shows are no where near reality. Blind Date is closer to reality TV than any of the above.

Needless to say I hardly watch 2hrs/week of TV now :|
