American Hot Rod

Was that the owner? I love this show, way better than Overhaulin. I just always seem to have work when its on...

I didn't know that show was still on. It seemed to be in free fall when I last saw it, thanks to the ego and asshole attitude of Boyd and that jackass garage manager.

He was the old metal worker.
Just read that he had lung cancer and died a week after his wife passed away.

As long as the delicious A.J. is on Overhaulin, they will have my undivided attention. 🙂

+1

Roy was a true master metal fabricator,he was the only one that I truely liked at Boyd's.

R.I.P. 🙁

Boyd doesn't look all that well lately either. He's slowing down. I notice he does nothing on these cars, whatsoever. It just seems like he goes around barking orders. The crew is clearly falling apart. I don't think Boyd is long for this world.

now how will they build cars? he knew everything
They'll do it like the bozo's at OCC build bikes.... Buy parts in boxes and tighten the screws.
Add paint and a profit margin.

A lot of people die after their spouse dies.

Still a major bummer, with only a week, I don't even think they had her funeral yet. It took a bout a week and a half for one of my grandpa's funerals after his death. (two days after Christmas). The other took a bit longer.

I think it takes a lot more than that to build cars. They have to get them ready in a very short period of time. Lots of custom pieces have to be fabricated in house. Due to the look, a lot of changes have to be re-engineered.
Roy left a very wide gap in terms of his knowledge and expertise. He obviously knew a lot more than putting parts together and tightening screws.

You have a good point, but I must say for me, American Hot Rod had the effect of convincing me I would never, under any circumstances, buy a car those guys built. Boyd is a complete ass, the crew seem like a bunch of misfits and slackers, and the cars largely seem to be either kit cars (I was amazed that the very first car they ever built on the show was that awful blue and yellow hot rod built on a prefab fiberglass body) or hastily cobbled together. For my money, the real artisans on that show are the off-site guys who do the body work (remember their work on the aluminum car? Amazing!) and upholstry, none of whom are Coddington employees. I have always found the show really weird in that respect - it seems like a negative form of marketing for their products.

Boyd Coddington really appears to be the stereotypical, cookie-cutter 1970's asshole, in the mold of Burt Reynolds, complete with the facial hair and whorish trophy wife. He just seems gross. I wouldn't want to be in the same room with him.

Covington comes across like a petty little man who's not much of an inspirational crew leader.
