American Hot Rod

Is it just me, or does this show NOT make you want to spend $100K plus on a Boyd Coddington hot rod? The crew seem like a bunch of whackos, and I wouldn't have a high level of confidence in the quality of their products after watching it. I can see how American Chopper would boost the sale of OCC bikes, but to me this show tends to deter me from wanting one of their cars.

I think this every time I watch the show.

Boyd comes off as a cock most of the time, the majority of the guys seem to be non-caring asshats.

About the only guys on the show that have earned ANY amount of respect are the paint shop guy (Charlie) and the hot rod shop manager....I cant think of his name.

The show must not be attracting much in the way of advertising, because they seem to have very few commercials. I think the bottom line is that the personalities are not as interesting as the ones on American Chopper, and it is kind of frustrating to watch them take 4 or more episodes to make one car (as compared to a couple of episodes of AC).

the young kid with the buck teeth?

The guy in the red hat who injured his knee snowboarding. doesn't move his mouth to talk.

He has earned my respect because he likes to learn. He has some knowledge of what he works with. He stays pretty cool, calm, and collected. Works late to finish what he is doing.

I'm surprised they keep that chubby idiot Blue Bear on. Not only does he need to be canned but he could also use a good ass kicking!

Cars are more complicated to build than choppers. Also the show hypes personalities to try to make it more interesting.

I am willing to bet that without the camera a day at Boyd's shop would as exciting as a day where you work.

They might not have any emotional attachment to the cars they make, but they put a lot of care and work into what they do. They do some amazing work, and have amazing work done for them (see the Alumatub body that Marcel made for them? Stunning considering it came from *one* drawing). They put top notch work into their cars, thought their crew does seem very rag-tag, regardless, they do some *great* work.

Ditto. That fat bastard needs a good pounding.

The process of building that body was indeed amazing, but I'm wary of giving BC credit for it.

I was struck on the first episodes of the show by the fact that they built an ugly blue and yellow hot rod using a prefab fiberglass body from Australia - I have a hard time seeing why such a car would have any particular cachet, when it is basically a glorified kit car.

The Alumatub looks like it will be awesome, but I have to question the quality of engineering that underlies it, since they always appear to be making things up as they go, and don't appear to be able to reach consensus as to things as simple as whether a frame is straight. That Alumatub should be blisteringly quick, but I wouldn't have a high level of faith in its ability to hold up to regular driving.

I think the show is interesting, but I have to say that I am getting a little burned out by the pacing - we are now on the fifth Alumatub episode, and it's not clear whether it will be done even then.

The guy that doesn't move his mouth is Mike. He seems to have his sh!t together. Blue bear is just a dumbass. Boyd does seem like a cock, and his wife looks like a whore!

Yeah, she is the stereotypical trophy wife, though at this point she has a few too many miles on her. His ex-wife seems like an evil hag, and Boyd himself seems like an annoying prick. I admit ignorance of the hot rod world, but I know he is considered a true pioneer, and that he introduced a lot of modern technology to hot rods (IRS, for example). I still can't see anything at all impressive about, say, that blue and yellow fiberglass car.

Did you see the work his crew did on the Junkyard Dog car? Without seeing that show, I probably wouldn't have much respect for the work they do. I was really impressed with the level of skill they put into cleaning that body up. The metal fab work was top notch IMO

Was his face messed up in an accident, fire, or something?

From quick reading over at the Discovery Channel boards it seems he was involved in a rollover accident of some sort of hot rod car (probably topless car) and his jaw was broken pretty badly.

So maybe his jaw is still healing, or it is going to be like that permanently because of surgery.
