American Express question...

Should be a quick answer. Does American Express raise your credit limit relatively quickly? and do you have to be the one that requests it?

One of the blue cards.

i had a blue for years and years before they raised my limit. during that timeframe my other cards were all automatically raised. then amex raised the limit twice in quick succession.

It's not really unlimited. Try spending a lot on the gold card and you'll see what I mean. There just isn't a DEFINED credit limit, but there is a cap.

I don't think you're right about the $4500 limit. I was able to charge $25k in one shot.

I have an Amex Blue. They raised it without me asking about 6 months after I had the card. It was a pretty substantial increase too. But as others have said, it's different for everyone.

I have the Green business card and it has no spending limit.

The scary part is I got it about 10 minutes after getting the Federal Tax ID for my business. AmEx is great for a small business owner.

This is a little off the subject, but do a lot of places accept American Express where you live? I live in a town with an area of about 40,000-50,000 and as far as restaurants go, I've only seen a couple that accept American Express.

Some guy came into the restaurant I work at and complained because we didn't accept American Express and went on a rant on how it was the 5th place that didn't accept it.

From what was explained to me, American Express simply costs more for businesses to accept, somehow.

If you are signed up for online access you can request a credit limit increase and if approved, it will be immediate.

Fry's is the only place around me that doesn't take AmEx. I wouldn't be surprised if it does cost more to accept AmEx.

i just got amex blue cash and i think i got a limit of 2500. Tell you one thing the card seem fake as ******. But I liked some of the rates I got on it. Would be nice to get that limit raised up in the future.

ive had a blue student for like 2.5 yrs - limit is now 14600
and ive gotta gold too - apparently there is no limit, the max ive charged it is 10k in a month tho

I haven't had a credit line increase in any of my cards in probably the last 5 years. Don't know why.

Many mom and pops don't take Amex. Most bigger places do. Amex is the only card that's accepted at Costco so that's why I carry it. It's also a good card for traveling and dining in the US.

The cap depends on the person though. There is no set cap for the Gold card.

you should request a limit increase. mine went from $500 to $1000 after a year. after that it really took off... now they approved a $10k+ limit but i don't think i'll want that.

There is no set cap for any of the charge cards (read: a card that doesn't have a credit line), but depending on your history with AMEX, they do have an "internal" limit they won't tell you about. Reach that limit and you'll receive a phone call from them.

Some business do not accept AMEX because AMEX charges more for processing fees than VISA/MC. VISA/MC for instance, charges me abotu 1.45%. AMEX is 2.39%. Small difference when you initially look at it, but try having revenues in the K's and millions and you'll see why some are turned off.

Azurik... who owns probably every single credit card from AMEX (blue, gold, platinum, black, etc. etc. etc.)

🙂
