Hi all,

I'm trying to understand the American express car insurance - I paid for my rental car I picked up today with my American express blue (pre-authorized, it hasn't fully been charged yet obviously until I return the car). I don't have primary insurance at all, as I don't own a car. I declined the CDW with National, but accepted the third party liability. If the car is in a collision, would american express cover me as primary for damage to the rental car?

I called them, and got mixed results.

It's a long story as for why I'm asking this, but needless to say, I got a policy through Access America, picked up the car, and then Access America later DECLINED the policy after I had already picked up the car.

For an authoritative answer you should refer to the terms and conditions you received with the card. But I believe that it will be secondary to other insurance... and if you don't have other insurance, then it covers you as primary.

I don't know what Access America is.

If you have the premium car rental insurance that you pay extra for, it acts as the primary. For the insurance you get simply for using the card to rent the car, it's secondary.

That i understand. The question is, if I don't have primary coverage, does it then act as primary? Because it's secondary coverage to something I don't have. Not all people have collision insurance on their car, and I don't even have any car insurance at all, so surely this comes up a lot.
