It's actually made of titanium and has a minimum spenditure amount of $127,000. My only problem with it is that it has a SLIGHT concave curviture to it. Otherwise it's a great travel card.

I've gotten that "WTF" look, too. My Discover Platinum card finally wore out (signature panel now read "VOID", mag strip was failing), so Discover sent me a reissue. But for some reason, they decided not to send me a plain old silver Platinum card like my previous issue - they sent me a TRANSLUCENT PURPLE card. Every time I hand it to a clerk, it's a bona-fide 'wtf' moment.

i use to work at costco where they ONLY accept AMEX. There were 2 members that came in all the time and they both had an AMEX black. Yes you have to have tons of money, yes you have to freely spend that money, and no you can't apply for the card AMEX sends only select ppl an invite to get one

If you read that correctly and even checked other websites, when they first rolled out the Centurion cards in Europe they used this proceedure.

The credit limits on my regular cards are higher than the AMEX Black. The expense/benefits ratio on this card isn't enticing and plays off the "image" of exclusivity with the posers.

Most all people I know that have the black is *NOT* because they're rich, but b/c they *expense* a lot of business on the card. A $50k/yr Corporate Event Planner can charge up event items on the card and easily reach the Black Card threshold in a matter of months. The same goes with small business owners that charge up overhead.

As a money magazine said regarding this subject, the rich have regular cards (i.e. Bill Gates, Warren Buffett) and are frugal. They became wealthy with this attitude, not by wasting huge $$ on a low bang/buck poser card.

I'm pretty sure it's more than that. And your income has to be HUGE. I knew a Saudi kid in HS that moved back to Saudi Arabia halfway through to live with his father... who had one (oil... lots of oil). According to him, the card has the power to open stores at any hour of night for your personal shopping needs. And you can empty stores to shop alone if you so desire. Maybe he was exaggerting... maybe not. But it sounds hardcore.

Realistically, it's up to the store owner/manager whether they want to bend over backwards for a Centurion card holder just like with any other customer. Amex can call them up at 3 in the morning and tell them they'll pay them $1000 to open the store for you, and the store owner can tell them to f--- off if they want to. I don't think their Amex merchant agreement REQUIRES them to do it.
